Thanks for the Info guys. What about obtaining the Re entry permit at the airport? I will be flying into BKK then a few days later I will need to fly back out. Is it better to get the permit at Soi Suan Plau or the airport?

Suan Plau any time it is open. Airport only after you check in for flight and before you enter immigration area. Airport usually faster (it needs to be) but up to you if you want the extra step then or not. I prefer to leave for the airport with only security/check in/passport check/immigration check/gate check to worry about.

A re-entry permit is different from an extension. Re-entry permit is only valid for as long as your current visa is in effect. You would need to get the extension on your visa first.

Actually the re entry permit has nothing at all to do with the visa but everything to do with the permitted to stay stamp. So any time you have a set permitted to stay in your passport and want to keep it alive you obtain a re entry permit prior to leaving Thailand.
