Looking to go to Chanthaburi New Year time, does anyone know of any decent apartments for about 5000baht p/m? I know it's a large town with a few provinces.

Anywhere where there's good access to fruit, maybe the beach? and possible buses/taxi's to the national park?

Many thanks, Dean

I think you'll be hard pressed to find listings of apartments in that price range on the internet. And even if so, I'd never book a room based on pics alone. As you probably know, noise is a huge factor here.

Your best bet is head there as soon as you can and have a poke around. Chanthaburi is a big province. With lots of beaches. Can you narrow it down a bit? The big city is a fair distance from the beach.

Ah thanks, to be honest I'm going to Chiang Mai first. I will probably head to Chanthaburi come the New year. I would like a quiter spot honestly, I;m not too familar with the surroundings on Chanthaburi. 5,000 baht I know is common in Chiang Mai. I would only want a very basic apartment, would actually prefer a fan room to air-con. Closer to a nice beach I would prefer with easy links to a city/access to the national parks, and fruit stalls.

Thanks a lot for your response.

5000 baht is very litle money, even for a very basic appartment around that time of year. Prices tend to double around christmas/New year. You also might consider Trat, wonderful market (lots of fruit), access to very quiet beaches if you don't mind driving, close to the islands, end good public transport in the form of buses etc. Quieter and probably slightly cheaper than Chantaburi.

Hi

I don't believe there are any such apartments in Chanthaburi city available for a one-month casual rental; in our 4th year here and have helped many cycling tourists with route planning and accommodation, reasonable knowledge of the local market I think; teachers in the city often rent rooms or have them provided with their agency contract, around 3500/mth plus electricity, plus internet would be standard - this is a studio room with a bed and a dresser, small fridge, some have a tv; no cooking facilities, and a bathroom. None we've found will rent out for less than a 6 month contract; furnished one bedroom units in our town rent at 7500b/mth, minimum 6mth contract.

It's not small province and you need wheels; two decent swimming beaches at that time of year, Chao Lao (from central up to the northern end) and Khung Wiman.

CL is 31 km from Chan city; KW 37km. Further down the coast Laem Sing may look good in tourist brochures, but being at the mouth of the huge Chan river it is permanently cloudy water, by choice I wouldn't swim there, but it's an interesting place to spend a day if you're interested in a bit of local history, still some remnants of the French occupation here.

There is no public transport that you might get in other cities. Taxis here are Mazda pickups and reluctant to take people to either of those beach locations without charging for a return journey as no likelihood of them getting a return passenger/s

We live almost halfway between Chan city and CL - the set fare here, as advertised at the bus terminal, is 180 baht, 13km one way. At night they won't turn the ignition key for less than 220, if at all - we've had refusals when getting back from Bangkok on the late bus.

There are two good national parks - inland, opposite direction to the beach. Namtok Phlio (various spellings Pliew, Pliu . . ) about 10km south-east from the city is very popular - advertised as the second-highest visitor rate in the country for a NP. The other is Khao Khitchakut about 25km north both have good bushwalks and swimming areas though over NY the waterfalls most likely disappointing, they need rain!

General prices - we are friends with a couple who have a resort at Chao Lao; sleep there tonight and it's low-season discount 500b; Friday/Saturday 700b. Holiday weekends, 1200b per night. They are already fully booked around NY 2014-5, same people come back year to year. I looked online at one of the larger CL hotels - they only have eight rooms left for the days 3 each side of NY.

Fruit - there's always fruit here, but the peak season is May-June when he provincial fruit festival is held each year.

Being realistic. You need a bigger budget, without a vehicle (there are motorcycles for hire if you are licensed and confident) it is quite impractical. Previous post mentions Trat having good public transport - if only we did here.

Thanks for the extensive reply!

To rent a room for 3500/mth plus electricity, plus internet would actually be ideal! I should have clarified as I didn't mean apartment. 6 months hmmm, well i'm here for 9 in total and will deffo be staying in Chaing Mai until end of Jan, so Feb - June 5 months I could ask for perhaps. I really need to choose a province to go to I guess. Thanks again for the info

Deena, very important for prices is if you are after the new year holidays, what you are looking for is a monthly weekly rate at a low end hotel,

Nearly everything within 100m of the beach is air con.

If you can afford about $90 more (3000b) or $3 a day it should be do-able.

We are away at the moment, but I am pretty sure that if you are in Feb on wards, 8000b a month will have you within 200m of the beach, better a thai make enquires though, I dubt you will find anythng on the net. Can ask around next month if you like.

Public transport though will be an issue.

Agree that for good prices a longer term contract. There are places around, but not wide spread and New Year is high season in terms of other short term rentals.

5 months would be fine for me. Even just a basic 1 bed room with electric supplies and internet connection I will be happy with for around 5k baht. Beginning of Feb I'm looking for.

Does that hotel in CL have a website?
