Problem being, Thai authorities lie about cause of death (anyone doubt that?), lots of suicides and road accidents.

And when you come right down to it, do you care how you die? or would you rather just avoid dying?

So when you compare all death stats,

You get a result that a Brit in Thailand is 17x more likely to die than a Brit traveling in another country.

And when you compare general murder stats,

Thailand 10x UK, Burma 15x UK. (I included Burma as many Burmese on the island)

so show us these stats

Straight murder rates put Thailand quite high up the list. That's the basic truth and considerably note dangerous than most of the western world.

So yes. The illusion of safety is there. Part of the difference is that foreigners van inadvertantly get into bad places because of ignorance. Its not Kansas Dorothy.

The only threat to my life in Thailand was ironically from a drunk policeman who warned me off someone's wife. So yes. Its glad to know who the good guys are.

I also dealt with the wife of that poor Brit who was shot in Banphai last year sometime. Hit men aren't that common in Milton Keynes.

Thailand is NEVER portrayed as being dangerous like Colombia or the Philipiinnes, but reality is, murders are far more common than back home.

I never had that illusion and I dont know why anyone else would. and the murder rate is not much different than all those carribean countries folks flock to.

500,000 Baht reward and this case closes in one week

Yes , that's true . The families of the victims should join forces and offer a big reward.

TIT and if it was a local behind the murders the case will be solved very quickly.

Just out of interest,

From here

http://garygraemejones.blogspot.com/2009/08/why-are-so-many-british-people-raped.html

"Complementing the UKs Thai prison population statistics, are the statistics for Britons Raped or Murdered and often Raped and Murdered in Thailand. I am still sourcing these numbers but independent researchers, using the figures from around 2005 to 2008 (in my opinion a relatively quiet time for rapes/murders of Britons) conclude that fully 10% of all murders of Britons overseas occur in Thailand!

Current figures exist in a report generated by the FCO. It is called British Behaviour Overseas and is available from their website. The report for August 2007 which covered the year 1st April 2005 to 31st March 2006 reported that for 381,000 estimated British Visits to Thailand 5 rapes were reported and 224 murders.

The report for the year 2006 2007 reported of the 860,000 visits 269 deaths and 2 rapes were reported. However be aware these figures only list the visiting British Nationals, not expats already living in Thailand."

And even more damning, the independent,

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/asia/with-so-many-britons-murdered-in-thailand-why-does-our-government-not-warn-of-the-dangers-faced-there-769640.html

"Thailand has one of the world's highest per-capita murder rates when the UN last counted it in 2000, it stood at 5,140 per year, though the annual total is now speculated to be more than 6,000. In the years 2003 to 2006, 17 of these victims were UK nationals, according to the FCO. These murders include a sexually motivated killing of a young British woman; a Thai police officer executing two backpackers in a crowded street; shootings, throat cuttings and two cases of other Westerners murdering UK nationals; and, more pertinently, several cases of Thai wives or their family members slaying British husbands.

On average, about 50 civilian UK nationals are murdered around the world each year (excluding terrorist attacks). This means that almost 10 per cent of all murders of Britons abroad are committed in Thailand a chilling figure, given that Thailand comprises only 0.6 per cent of all foreign travel from UK shores."

Once again, totally distorted and unreliable numbers.

1 - "Current figures exist in a report generated by the FCO" - link address please.

2 - "year 1st April 2005 to 31st March 2006 reported that for 381,000 estimated British Visits to Thailand 5 rapes were reported and 224 murders" - .The average year currently is for over 900,000 person visits per year hence 381K seems unreasonably low, AND, your number 224 murders should I believe read, 224 deaths, including those by natural causes, murders in that year were around 6 as I recall..

3 - your numbers for the following year, 2006/2007 comprising 860,000 visits sounds reliable (note the contrast with your previous year figures) and 269 deaths (all deaths) seems reasonable, murders comprised 4 as I recall.

Once again, totally distorted and unreliable numbers.

"In early 2006, just after the brutal rape and murder of the young British backpacker Katherine Horton on a deserted Koh Samui beach, and following an 18-month period in which nine Britons were murdered, the FCO had a revealing internal debate about what safety advice they should give to British nationals travelling to Thailand, as an email obtained by the BBC under the Freedom of Information Act testifies: "The trouble with [giving advice about the murder rate]... is that it would effectively highlight the number of murders over the past year or more here, which in the current circumstances could have a disproportionate impact on Thailand's reputation and legitimate commercial interests.".

Many online references to the FCO internal debate obtained by the BBC.

But can't find the transcript.

Up to you what you believe.

ahem,,, the ciggy butt is a rare brand smoked only by Burmese

Would love to know where you pulled this out of, LM Red is one of the most popular brands amongst Thais and Farangs

Bored?

Huh? Are Burmese now counted as farangs?

The most common smoked tobacco in Thailand is actually chop chop. LM probably makes up less than 5% of all tobacco smoked in the country.

Thais are far more likely to smoke TTM cigarettes than any other. On the islands and more prosperoys areas though, some Thais smoke LM.

Burmese would most likely smoke roll ur own chop chop and Thai brands. But nothing is ever 100%

I can’t say if he is still on the island.

“If the Met Police want to come here they are welcome but I don’t think it is necessary. We still don’t know if the killer was Burmese, Thai or foreign.”

The butt of the cigarette, found very close to Hannah’s battered body, is a brand normally smoked only by Thai and Burmese people.

The quoted source (The Independent Newspaper) states original source British FCO email, obtained by the BBC News under freedom of information act.

What reason would you (or anyone else) have to disbelieve The Independent newspaper and BBC News?

The nine murders you mention now is far removed from the 269 murders you cited previously. Again, you quote but don't supply a link to the reference so we don't know if it's just a blog or your imagination. it sure as sh*t isn't any official set of numbers from a reliable source.

The quoted source (The Independent Newspaper) states original source British FCO email, obtained by the BBC News under freedom of information act.

What reason would you (or anyone else) have to disbelieve The Independent newspaper and BBC News?

Exactly why each of us come to this forum to discuss various matters is down to the individual, highest on my list of reasons by far is that people understand the facts about life in Thailand.

It's fair if people want to leave or not come here, based on factual concerns, it's not reasonable that they do the opposite just because some posters hold a grudge against the country or its nationals or simply want to create mischief or worse.

To be clear, I will challenge any post I see that posts false or misleading information be it related milk production, crime, cost of living or any other aspect of life in Thailand that most non-Thais's or long term residents would not immediately understand and is clearly untrue.

I would expect no less in return from anyone,

ahem,,, the ciggy butt is a rare brand smoked only by Burmese

Would love to know where you pulled this out of, LM Red is one of the most popular brands amongst Thais and Farangs

Bored?

Huh? Are Burmese now counted as farangs?

The most common smoked tobacco in Thailand is actually chop chop. LM probably makes up less than 5% of all tobacco smoked in the country.

Thais are far more likely to smoke TTM cigarettes than any other. On the islands and more prosperoys areas though, some Thais smoke LM.

Burmese would most likely smoke roll ur own chop chop and Thai brands. But nothing is ever 100%

If I say that amongst the folks that smoke cigarettes here, LM Red is very popular - not a rare brand at all - is that better?

The poster claims the brand is only smoked by Burmese, so I am pointing out that this is not so; Thais and farangs smoke them too.
