The problem is partly due to Thai being a tonal language, but not entirely, these types of statistical machine translators such as Bing and Google are reliant solely on bilingual research paper submissions on the net. As Thailand does not produce as many bilingual papers as some countries the translations are quite poor in comparison to many languages.

Bing is the worst translation engin I have ever seen, rarely gets one word right, no idea why.

Google translate does a fair job. But they hire Thai translators, which causes problems.

Thai translators often heavily sanitize stronger Thai expressions to make them more polite.

And also two individual Thai words often have a different meaning when added together.

Further two Thai words used together can sometimes be used in special circumstance.

In the simple Durex advert we have an example of the special circumstance and an example of more polite.

Special circumstance

KatKuen, Kat + Kuen individually both mean 'resist' and 'coerce' but used together mean 'resistance to physical force'.

Sanitized to be more polite

Yawm in the dictionary is defined as 'give in', but actually means 'reluctantly accept defeat' which is quite different as it indicates an unwanted outcome.

A well known on line translator (not Google or Bing) translated a short sentence I found on FB from my wife. On a recent trip to the States, we went to an open zoo in AZ.

She was telling her friends that she saw a bear.

That well known translator translated it as 'did you see my pussy'?

Well, smarty pants, some of us don't, some of us rely on "Bing" for the translation from Thai! My wife, a graduate in French and English has a problem sometime with the literal translation from Thai to English, she says that Thai is so convoluted it's a wonder anyone can properly translate it! So there! You calling my wife a liar??????

If you rely on Bing, you might as well just make up whatever you want to think. It translates a bunch of Thai words into a bunch of English words that have no connection.

The concept being built around algorithms which search bilingual phd papers means it should be able to learn the meaning of any word or combination within context. The biggest problem is the lack of Thai English bilingual research papers. There is also the Google Translator Center which I think is what you are referring to, this is a translation service using some paid and some volunteer translators but they are never employed by Google but directly paid by the consumer. Users can also submit contributions to the regular Translator. In time it will only improve, Bing on the other hand does not have access to what Google does, they use the same concept but just don't have the content in order to make it in any way useful.

I had a play once and found that it was more accurate to first translate from English to Norwegian and then from Norwegian to Thai. Very strange but the result was much more understandable. LOL

I will have to try the English to Norwegian to Thai.... but it will be a pain in the ass. I use Google and translate back and forth until I am satisfied. But it takes a long time.... even then it is not always exactly understood by my correspondent.

Question I have - am returning to Thai on the upcoming 3rd. I am planning on staying with my "adopted" family....and to stay 90 days or more... (a friend of the family has offered to marry me)... is about learning Thai... books, dictionaries... english to thai... where can I obtain them. I once read a comment on Facebook by a native English speaker and made fun of her speaking language skills. She was completely confused. It turned out her English comment had been translated into English by Google and ended up making no sense. I'm always amused by the Thai English translations and usually have to get my wife to look at them.

Translation is a problem particularly where you need an accurate rendition of what you're trying to put across.

I do not have a paranoia problem at all, All I post is bare fact. You tell me it's not true ??? up to anyone who wants to CHANCE it. Married or not.
