Hello there,

I was advised to ask on here about a little problem. My flight out of Thailand has been cancelled and I have been moved on to another flight 4 days laters. I had booked my flight to coincide with the last day of my Tourist Visa.

Given the recent crackdown and new rules regarding overstay I've heard about whilst here I was wondering would I encounter a problem checking into hotels during those 4 days beyond my visa expiration?

I'm told it's sometimes possible to clear the fine in advance at immigration offices or alternatively could apply for an extension. I arrived in Thailand on a 30 day visa exampt and after a trip in Malaysia got a Tourist Visa in Kuala Lumpur in case that would make a difference or impact of an extension also I have overstayed in the past once by less than a day and went unfined and about 5 years ago by 6 days when I was rather stupid and assumed I had 30 days when crossing a land border.

Paying either the 2000B fine or 1900B extension isn't a problem it was mostly concern about the situation of overstay and checking into hotels.

Thank you for any advice.

If you have tourist visa and have not yet done the 30 day extension you could get it a immigration on Monday. Or a 7 day extension.

The airline should of taken care of your overstay at the airport since your flight was canceled. I think they could of arranged the 7 days with immigration at the airport.

You should have no problem checking into a hotel. If they ask explain the problem or show something to prove your flight was canceled.

Thank you, ubonjoe and hereforgood.

I'll contact the airline again to ask if they arranged anything for overstays. They highlighted when contacting me about the flight that they will assisst in claiming or themselves will reimburse extra unforeseen costs but also don't assume any responsability for those costs.

I think I will go to the local immigration office (hua hin) on Monday and apply for an extension since the cost is near the same anyway then if the airline hasn't handled it.

Thanks again.

Last year I had a one day overstay. I had no trouble checking into a hotel. I doubt the clerk could even find the right Exempt Visa stamp. I have a lot of stamps and pages in my passport. They typically just photocopy the ID page. In also seriously doubt that every little hotel sends in a daily immigration report. Even if they did, I am pretty sure the hotel doesn't record your visa comings and goings, and I doubt your name will trigger the SWAT team if it even gets entered in some database where they might possibly check open or expired visa statuses. All possible of course, but I doubt the information flows that quickly.

Not sure if it will effect you but hotels are required daily to send to immigration a list of their guests and their Pp information

Better clear the situation before trying to check in at a hotel.

The places I go always check the visa situation.

Don't worry about the hotel - Only you might have problems IF immigration check out the report from the hotel.....

Did you have flight insurance for a later claim of reimbursement? Also - as recommended getting a 7 days Extension should be easy enough. And - hotel reporting is all over the map ... I have been in about 15 towns and cities in Thailand in about nine months time... I stayed at many different hotels and resorts and such... I do not recall any of them making photo copies of anything but the ID page nor do I remember any one making any notations. In some situations I have supplied my own photocopy and have seen others do it... Just the ID page.

Also - I recently went to Krabi immigration to get a Letter of Residence (or what ever it is called) required for being able to buy a motorcycle... They took forever to find enough entries where I had stayed in the past to print out a list of hotels and resorts for a report. Of the approximate 12-15 hotels and resorts I have stayed at - only 5 were on the list... In addition I had to explain several times where I had been currently staying in Ao Nang - for over two months - at the same place... as it was not reported.

So - I recommend you go get a hotel room and relax...

Go find a girlfriend & have her check in. She can can hand you the key & either walk away or walk into the room with you (Up2U).

Problem solved.

One minor problem solved- at the risk of a real bad problem...

And where would immigration take the manpower from to check the hotel guest's in and out's on a daily basis in a tourist-hub during high season?

Cheers.

Manpower? Manpower? They don't need no stinking manpower.

A few thousand $$$ would buy a database program that would look through each hotel's daily submittal and trigger a flag on passport numbers that are on overstay, or wanted for crimes, or reported as stolen, or...or....

Thanks for the further replies.

Should have stated the flight wasn't cancelled whilst at the airport it was cancelled ahead of time. Was supposed to be flying out in 2 days. They didn't explain why my original flight was cancelled and that they would either help or reimburse any extra costs.

I think like most things what's in the news and the additional, mostly, nonsense you hear from people here can put doubt in the mind. I've noticed a couple of the hotels I've stayed at over the last month that after copying the photo page of the passport flipping through until they found my current visa.

Since I would have to pay about the same in a fine I'm happy to visit the near by immigration office to get an extension and tack the cost on to the list of costs.

Think I'd rather rangle with immigration officials than with a temporary Thai girlfriend.

Thanks again for your advice and responses.

There's already an option from immigration for hotels, etc, for the "housemaster" as it's referred to..As they are required to register "aliens" within 24 hours of their checking in to the accomodation it's usual (ha ha!) to fill in a form detailing all this (I think it's TM30) and submit it to the nearest immigration office.

About five years ago when I was working for a company renting out holiday homes to tourists, I checked with immigration and and after a lot of difficulty, found there was an on-line option.

By registering your company/hotel/whatever you could then submit the details directly to the immigration database. I kept pestering the local immigration office about our application. They said it would take a long time as their local computer was "broken" - yeah. It took four/five months to get approved.

Eventualy got the login issued and were able to register guests using the net.

I did notice however, that when logged in to the immigration database, there was an option to view all alien registrations logged in that area - including illegal immigrants - an awful lot of chinese nationals listed. So glad they have a secure online system here - TIT.

Book your Hotel Online ( hotels2thailand.com or Agoda) once done booking they will issue you with a hotel voucher. Just present that along with any valid photo Id, that should do. Most of the 3 star or 2 star hotels don't give a damn. Just use your Driving license,.
