NCPO doesn't intend to threaten academic freedom: Spokesman
By Digital Content

1411462724792.jpg

BANGKOK, Sept 23 -- Thailand's National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) has again stated that it has no intention to threaten academic freedom, but asked all sides for cooperation to refrain from political activities, which could lead to a conflict during the country’s reform.

Regarding a seminar entitled “Democracy Classroom” held at Thammasat Universtity's Rangsit campus last Thursday, stopped by the police 30 minutes after it began, NCPO spokesman Col Winthai Suvaree said the police did so because some activities could be linked to politics.

The authorities need to know ahead of time the details of the content and participants to prevent any intervention by some persons, which may contradict means in keeping order in overall picture, he said.

Some academics, lecturers and students of the group calling themselves the League of Liberal Thammasat for Democracy (LLTD) were detained for questioning at the police station and released without charge on the same day.

Col Winthai said that the police asked participants to give details of their activities. Police discussed with the detainees what was needed to be done to organize such activities in this period. Details must be clear to prevent any hidden agenda.

The country is going ahead to reform and reunite in line with the phase 2 and 3 roadmap, he said. The NCPO has asked for cooperation from all parties to put on hold political activities which are sensitive and could be an obstacle to addressing the country’s problem, the spokesman said. Insurgency ruled out as cause of Songkhla train derailment

BANGKOK, 23 September 2014 (NNT) – Southern authorities confirmed that the train derailment that happened on September 18th in Songkhla province was not an act of terrorism.

Chana district officials and army representatives dismissed speculations that the derailment was a possible attempt by a third-party to instigate unrest within the area. Initial investigations found that a number of train track parts including bolts and rail plates were missing and the lack of these parts likely caused the train to derail last week.

Police suspect that track parts may have been removed to be sold in local markets. Similar cases have been reported in the province many months ago. Owners of scrap yards in the area are being summoned for further questioning.

Authorities have also found that traces of DNA of those involved did not match those of known insurgent groups. A total of eleven people have been injured from the derailment but all are recovering well following the incident.

Vegetarian Festival: first day subdued

RANONG, 23 September 2014 (NNT)- On its first day, the Vegetarian Festival in Ranong is not as vibrant as it could be; even the price of vegetables hasn’t risen much. However, fruit prices are on the rise.

The vegetable and fruit vendors have complained that the market is slow despite the start of the nine day festival, compared to the same period last year.

During the first nine days of the ninth lunar month, the Vegetarian Festival pays homage to nine Chinese deities. It involves doing good deeds, and includes adopting a jay (Chinese vegetarian) diet, while refraining from vices, to purify oneself.
