BANGKOK: -- Justice Minister Paiboon Khumchaya has vowed to take action against prison chiefs if any banned items such as illicit drugs or mobile phones are found in their facilities.

Paiboon announced his tough stance Friday.

"We won't tolerate any presence of banned items," he said, after giving his policies to the heads of 143 prisons across the country.

Paiboon said banned items would never find a way to enter correctional facilities if officials were strict enough.

"Before you enter such facilities, you are subject to a series of searches. So if officials implement measures required by their jobs, no banned items will be able to sneak in," he said.

Paiboon is against the idea of buying cellular-signal jamming devices, describing it as something that would fail to tackle problems at their cause.

"All we need are officials who honestly carry out their duty," he said.

This should be the motto for this entire country! Heck, if its citizens can not expect this at ANY level of its own government, then it is a fat chance that this can be realized in the penal system with the nation. I wish Paiboon all the success in the world but the truth of the matter is that he is merely pissing in the wind.

Same old problem! Salary not high enough to live in a reasonable manner, use position to make money so you can.

Can't keep using the same old excuses for corruption, the problem always said is the rewards far far exceed the likelihood of actually being convicted of any crime.Well that may be but its mortally wrong for a Buddhist to practise such and they also make a huge deal about being a Buddhist country.

The truth is there is a morality dysfunction here which goes from double parking wherever you wish to covering up a murder.... it goes much further than a small paycheck.

Back to topic ..... im sure the prison chiefs will find there are no major breaches of the governing rules there.

Recent news reports suggest some inmates have managed to arrange drug deals via smuggled mobile phones.

Paiboon said he was aware that prisons faced a shortage of staff but he insisted that existing officials must do their best.

He said he was trying to seek better remuneration for officials working at high-security jails.

The problem with signal jammers is that they would also jam the warders phones.

so, then...what's the punishment? ...to be determined?...a future possibility?...still working on it?...

"Thai prison chiefs face punishment to be determined, possibly in the future by someone who is still working on it, if phones or drugs found in jails"

Why do the warders need mobile phones ?

I can't see why Paiboon is against jammers. Why not reduce demand as well as supply?

Admittedly, the jammer might need monitoring to prevent "accidental"loss of power.

Why is that a problem? Landlines are available, and much easier to track usage.
