Grand travel events planned for Ko Tao after murder case solved

BANGKOK, 28 September 2014 (NNT) - Minister of Tourism and Sports Kobkarn Wattanawarangkun has traveled to Ko Tao island in Surat Thani province to follow up on the progress of the murder of two British tourists. The minister said she would arrange activities to boost confidence among tourists after the case was closed.

After arriving in the island, the minister met with local officials, tourism entrepreneurs and tourists to listen to their problems and opinions. The Surat Thani governor told the minister that Ko Tao still lacked government officers to work on the island and there was insufficient water for consumption. The island also faced an electricity problem since it used power from the private sector only.

Ms Kobkarn said she had studied the problems of Ko Tao before visiting the island and confirmed all sides were doing their best in solving the murder case. The minister added that she had approved the establishment of a tourist police center on the island as well as grand events to improve the image of Ko Tao.

what a joke, they refuse to do anything about the local mafia there but will cover up as much as they can in the meantime. The fact that they still have not caught the killers is not important to them as long as they can start to generate more money, totally pathetic.

Isn't the main problem with Kho Tao that 2 murders are walking free and being protected by the mafia and local police whilst they look for some poor unsuspecting immigrant to frame.

Did she say after the case was solved or after it was closed? They are not the same thing.

Where is the British Embassy in all of this? He can't still be at lunch/dinner can he?

This situation is becoming increasingly bizarre.

Sick to even be contemplating the issue of increasing tourism at this point in time, no mention of her views on the murders themselves only that she is satisfied all that can be done is being done efficiently and satisfactorily. Like I said SICK

Nothing has changed or is going to change there. They may try and convict a suspect, but the rot will remain on the island.

Think they might have to put the "activities" on the back burner for a while!

They don't seem any closer to bringing the mafioso to justice.. Oops, I mean foreigner!

"The minister said she would arrange activities to boost confidence among tourists after the case was closed."

The minister has to wait for a very looooooong time for this case to close, if it ever closes, after knowing the incompetence of the police.

Agngsta described it as biszare you're not kidding, what are we celebrating ,some token celebration is envisaged, if this is the standards set by the government on how to run a tourist industry, then support for the reignation of the Minister must be the only course of action , Minister how insultuing can you get , pardon the offence but you truly need your head read , the nutty professor would be good company for you.

I feel so very sorry for the families of these two kids. Could Thailand at least try to show a little respect.

These people have the tact of a sledgehammer.

They just can't help being insensitive.

This isn't about two murders, it's about the way things work here.

Can´t wait to travel to Japan and make my own PR tour for Thailand

under the banner" avoid the Land of Shame and fake Smile"

It's not a fake smile... It's a crocodile's smile.

'Grand Events' are being planned. Locals are to be rewarded with new water and electricity supplies. How can this really be being planned and discussed by these insensitive people at a time when the killers still walk free? A permanent memorial to the two victims of the KohTao atrocity would be a nod in the right direction, but how likely is that?

I hope people will boycott this island for years ....

We can shake our heads in disbelief, we can mutter to ourselves and amongst ourselves but can anyone honestly say they are in the least bit surprised ?

This is the LoS at it's unfeeling, uncaring and money making worst.

"case solved" or "case closed" ?....................I'm pretty sure I know which one it will be.

Angsta mentioned the British Embassy and I've had experience of the Diplomatic Service in a couple of Asian capitals.

Very often the take ' diplomacy ' to extremes and that includes not unduly upsetting the host country so attitudes and language can be moderated just a bit too much. I do remember reading a representative was sent to the island early on but nothing further.

Of course they can easily hide behind they fact that they cannot interfere in an ongoing investigation in a sovereign nation and throw in that ' appropriate representations ' have and are being made.

One of the ways to light a fire is if questions come from the Foreign Office and that requires pressure in Britain by family and the media.

they have done nothing remotely close to getting the case solved and they are planning some grand event of CELEBRATION?!

what has this country degraded into?

PM please hear the calls of decency and sanity!

This however, is a clear indicator that something big will happen within the next few days that WILL close this case for GOOD.

Absolutely sickening. Two people bludgeoned to death, and all they care about is the tourist dollar!! Low-life creatures and greedy bastards. bah.gif

"Grand Events" Thats right a few Grand Events and we can forget about the brutal Murder of 2 kids and the escape of the perpetrator while the police sat back and played with their cocks

Sickening Crass, Money Grabbing Thailand

To the Thai people and their not-so-elected government:

"On behalf of the expat-community please allow me to express a deepfelt apology for any inconvenience, the untimely murder of two young Brits has caused to the cashflow in your holy tourist industry"

And just when you think the most stupid things have been said and done someone comes along and trumps it.

There must be a "non think tank" coming up with all this.
