Thailand eyeing to attract 20,000 Brunei tourists

BANGKOK: -- The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is expecting to get about 20,000 Bruneian tourists this year, or over 40 percent more than last year’s 14,000 tourist arrivals, according to The Brunei Times.

TAT Assistant Director Worapon Sudaporn said most of the Bruneians go to Bangkok and Pattaya to shop, eat and visit tourist spots. She said most shoppers visit Bangkok’s malls as they offer a variety of products at reasonable prices.

Worapon is also encouraging Bruneians to visit other places like HuaHin and Chiang Mai which are more quiet and peaceful.

“HuaHin, which is a seaside place, is a popular destination among the locals. Bruneians should go there as there are not many tourists there unlike in Pattaya,” she said. Worapon said that that HuaHin is three hours away from Bangkok and also offers the same facilities such as shopping centres and hotels.

She noted that the decrease in the number of tourists from November last year was due to economic crises and political protests.

She said that with the upcoming Loi Krathong festival during the full moon in early November, more tourists are expected to arrive into Thailand later this year.

According to the official Department of Tourism numbers (so they have to be true) - foreign tourist arrivals from Brunei are down 32.96% Jan - Aug compared to same time last year (6,044 arrivals) and down 17.56% for Aug 2014 compared to Aug 2013 (798 arrivals). Good luck hitting 20K

It seems what most muslims on holiday want is a holiday from being muslim.

Didn't Brunei recently announce Sharia law? I'd have thought that Thailand would be the last place they'd want to visit, with the death penalty for indulging in activities which are considered fairly common in Thailand.

Very cheap and inaccurate accusation of racism - isn't the muslim faith practised by most races?

Brunei has a population of 400,000 - so Thailand is hoping that 5% of Brunei's population will visit every year? Yeah, right.

Why not aim for 5% of China as well - that way they will get an additional 50 million tourists per year. Add India and that's 100 Million tourists from only 2 countries!

Stop trying to give them bright idea's they are too dim to think of themselves !
