You'd think they would have finally gotten the message not to keep launching new systems till they have been road tested. Running 8 now and it just plain and simply doesn't do what it says on the box. Windows is seriously flaunting with dangers if it continues to offer up garbage OS every second round. There are just too many options, and some free!

There's been some speculation that MS might end up offering the new version as a free upgrade for existing customers. But from what I heard, there was zero mention of pricing in MS's latest presentation.

Why not use Win 8 in desktop mode. I never see the metro interface.

Actually from the outset I have used Win8 with Classic Shell, which neatly gets rid of nearly all the tiled elements. But they are still lurking in the background; things like settings panels, Windows store, and various tiled apps that are installed by default like Skype and PDF reader and which have to be uninstalled and replaced with desktop versions. I just want to be permanently rid off all applications that only work full-screen, and the entire tiled interface.

My Windows 8.1, and 8 before that, had Skype and Reader in the tiles. I installed desktop Adobe Reader and I don't use Skype. They don't come up on my computers unless I open them manually.

Talk about jumping the gun. It is not even going to be available until the end of NEXT year, at the earliest. And even then, it is usually best to wait for the SP1 release.

Going to that netmarketshare.com link in the article, below is how the market share breaks out by various operating systems such as Windows, Mac OS, Linux...Win 7 and XP sill have three-quarters of the market.

I will be purchasing a new computer when they are released with the new Windows.

I have been running Windows 8 since beta was released. I like Windows 8.

I like W8. I like the Metro interface - better than a start menu, for mouse as well as touch in my experience. But it's easy to run in Desktop mode if you prefer that.

But I won't upgrade. Agree with some posters - if it ain't bust, don't fix it. It's not likely the new system will do anything new that I need.

As Tallguy says there was talk of W9 being a free upgrade. Seems unlikely now.

I wonder is there will be support for ARM processors? Probably not. Which means no more of the terrible RT version.

The preview download will be available today sometime.

Did any also notice that they released a (sort of) Chromecast rival called the "Microsoft Wireless Display Adapter" that only uses Miracast?

And twice the price apparently.

They've got such a feel for what the customers want.

Linux has no market share it is free and grossly under reported - years ago Bill Gates said so.

From what I have read it is a lot cheaper than Chromecast

Then either you can't read or someone is fibbing to you.

Chromecast: (although it has gone up a bit): $35

MWDA: $60

My laptop PC runs Win 8.1 as I got a cheap (USD25) official upgrade from Win 7 to Win 8 back when Win 8 was released, and I thought it would be a good idea to have one version of Win 8 running somewhere so that I could keep up to date for my clients.

If there is a free upgrade from Win 8 to Win 10 then I will take it because Win 8 (or rather the tiled "Metro" interface and its full-screen apps) is just terrible. If the upgrade to Win 10 is pay but cheap then I will probably take it also, just to be shot of Win 8.

I did the same thing in the early release period for Windows 8. Purchased an upgrade version at the time for their special offer of $25 and installed it on a backup PC at home, just to see how it ran and to judge whether I wanted to upgrade my main PCs... After running Win 8, I quickly decided to stay with Win 7 for my main desktop and laptop PCs.

If Microsoft does the same thing for Windows 10 (offers a free or very low cost upgrade), I'd probably give it a try initially on one backup machine, depending on how the initial user reviews, bugs, etc. fare in the early going. But no way am I going to shell out any serious money for a Windows 10 upgrade of my main Windows 7 PCs. Probably just wait until they die and need replacing.

I've certainly heard and understood how Windows 10 might be an improvement for those who got unwillingly shoehorned into MS's abortive Win 8 Frankenstein (touch-based) OS. But I've yet to hear much of anything that would make Win 10 a compelling upgrade for someone who's already comfortably using Windows 7 on existing machines.

Windows 8 is so much faster under the hood than Win 7, it makes sense to migrate and just install Classic Shell or something to restore the Win 7 Desktop.

It's not difficult.

I'm just glad the idiots have seen sense and put back what worked.

As the old saying goes (clean version) - If it ain't broken, don't fix it!

if it's free to upgrade from win 8, i will take it. i have one machine which runs this hideous abomination. my other 4 computers have win 7 on them, and that's how i like it. it's by far the best consumer OS MS has come up with. of course, they couldn't leave it like that, they had to shove win 8 down everybody's throat. following the usual MS protocol, they will issue another OS, which people must buy in order to have a decent OS. It goes something like this:

Win 98: pretty good for its time

Win 98ME: a POS where consumers had to pay again for a decent OS

Win XP: very good

Win Vista: a POS where consumers had to pay again for a decent OS

Win 7: very very good

Win 8: a POS. where consumers had to pay again for a decent OS

see the pattern?

Well , if you had a basis for believing your first sentence, - that Microsoft releases products before they are road tested - Then why in the world are you even running Windows 8 now. Microsoft released windows8, knowing full well that there were many many many complaints about the missing start button. Days after it's release you could read in any forum, that people were having difficulty with it (besides just the missing Start button). So why would you willingly join their crowd?

When I bought my current laptop, I opted for the good old Windows 7 instead of the then current Windows 8. As for Windows 10, I will wait to see what happens AND wait for this laptop to be on it's last legs. I have too much specialty software on my laptop to think about before I transition to Windows 10. I do wish the good old Microsoft all the luck in the world with their Windows 10 though.
