I'm looking to get the snip in Bangkok and I keep hitting brick walls wherever I go.

I'm 33 years old and have 2 kids, one is 4 and the other is 2. I don't want any more, but all the hospitals that I went to have told me that I am too young to have a Vasectomy.

The doctors seem to think that the woman is responsible for birth control.

Can anyone recommend a place, in Bangkok, where I can get it done?

You can try the PDA clinic , but I don't know if they will agree given your young age and how young your two children still are. The latter is relevant as the risk of death is still elevated for children under the age of five. Doctors are considering how you would feel if one or both of your children died.

You could try the DIY method-couple of bricks and bring together as you would a pair of cymbals.....drop of Sangsom and it dulls the pain whistling.gif

Do think carefully.

I had the snip in 1993 at the tender age of 34. With 5 kids, I didn't think I'd want any more, my ex only had to see tadpoles on Discovery and she got pregnant.

Fast forward to 2003, divorced, soon to be re-married, Wifey asked about babies "before it's too late for her" (she already had three well grown boys)........

As it happens we're both now grandparents which has the advantage that if the nipper needs changing you can hand it back to mum :)

I've given it a lot of thought. I would freeze some of my swimmers beforehand, just in case we decide to have any more kids in the future.

My relationship status has become complex of late and the inability for woman to take one pill a day makes this the best option for me.

Just a suggestion....can't she get the depo injection? She would only need to get it once every 3 months. Costs 100 baht at government hospitals and around 800 to 1,000 at international ones.

I'm glad no one has suggested "see Noi, the duck owner, in Muang district." I would hate to see such a frivolous posting on a serious thread like this.

Have you tried International Specialist Clinic in Soi 42? A friend of a friend was fixed up there, but he was about 40.

I have a Thai friend who is in his thirties and so far he as been totally unsuccessful in getting it done here in Thailand. He has even had his wife go with him to various clinics and still gets the same negative responses

Had my wife call around today without any luck. Too young apparently.

The injections are not really an option. My wife has this irrational fear of needles and the girlfriend has an irregular cycle which means there's about 2 to 3 weeks of uncertainty.

I may need to fly to a nearby country to get it done.

Do try PDA, though you will have to go there in person...hard ti get info on phone and anyway not the best approach, it is too easy to say "No" on the phone, harder when face to face with a patient.

They are an NGO dedicated to family planning and reproductive rights so your best bet.

They are a strictly no frills clinic but quality is fine.

Do NOT get a "snip" in Thailand.

The doctors here have no experience because Thai males do not get V's.

Do you really want a guy with no experience slicing up your jewels?

Get it done in a country where it is standard medical procedure and that uses the latest Non-Invasive Techniques.

Better yet, research the experimental method of injecting a gel into your vans deferens that solidifies to create a blockage but that can be dissolved later should you change your mind. I wish it was available when I got snipped. Not because I wanted more children but that I never recovered the vigor and vitality I had pre-op.

But don't have it done in Thailand. You will have regrets.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I'm researching a few places in Singapore where I can have it done.

"My wife has this irrational fear of needles and the girlfriend has an irregular cycle ..."

Huh?

My wife starts crying the minute they mention having to give her an injection or take a blood sample. So getting a regular injection would be torture for her.

My girlfriend's period doesn't come regularly, sometimes she is 1, 2 or even 3 weeks late which makes me freak out. The hospital and clinics give her an appointment card, after she has a contraceptive injection, and it's supposed to coincide with her cycle 3 months later, but doesn't, so they refuse the second injection until she has her period, which can be up to 3 weeks after the scheduled appointment.

Getting a Vasectomy is the only fool proof method in which I can be sure.

ClutchClark's experience, and the brick walls that I am coming up against, means I will have to get it done in Singapore or Hong Kong.

Please don't post alarmist claims like this with no basis in fact. Vasectomy is extremely common in Thailand, has been a mainstay of the Thai Family Planning program from the onset and was heavily promoted (inc. free vasectomies on the Kings Birthday etc) in the beginning of it. It is relied on by about 5% of married Thai couples. Female sterilization, on the other hand, is fairly rare.

Non-scalpel vasectomy was introduced decades back.

BTW, OP, PDA performs 80% of the vasectomies done in Bkk and 30% of those done in the provinces, it is the leading provider of vasectomy in Thailand. Before resorting to Singapore be sure to try them. Other TV members have had vasectomies there and been happy with it.

At the motorbike taxi stand at the entrance to Nana, ask for Somchai (wears number 34)

He will do it while you wait, it helps to be drunk before he performs the proceedure..

It is not zero or anywhere near that. It is in the thousands annually.

Your one bad experience cannot be generalized to all Thai physicians. Anymore than the positive first hand experiences other TV memebrs have posted of their vasectomies generalizes to all Thai doctors. Obviously as with any procedure, care needs to be taken in selection of the doctor.

PDA recommended specifically because they perform more vasectomies in Thailand than anywhere else.

I'm not against having it done in Thailand, it's just that nowhere will perform the operation on me, ClutchClark's experience is another small factor but I know that botched jobs can happen anywhere.

If you have a contact that will do it, then please share their information.

Cheryl, there are urologists in the US that perform 1,000's annually in just one clinic--not the entire country.

But let the male readers decide for themselves. After all, for you its just a statistic, for us its a bit more personal ;-(

I have referred you to the place most likely to do it. Did you try them? If they won't, then indeed it is unlikely anyplace in Thailand will.

I have called them and so has my wife. They said no because of my age.

That's why I was asking if you knew anyone specific at PDA to contact. Maybe someone in a position of authority who I can reason with.

No, I don't, but in my experience it is always a mistake to call and ask this sort of thing by phone. Among other things, the person you will be talking to is not someone with the authority to decide something (especially if it is a bending of usual rules or practices) and Thais are very averse to "bothering" superiors with questions. And as you have surely noticed, "can not" and "don't have" are preferred answers for any situation where figuring out what the persons really wants and why would be a hassle.

Suggest you go there in person stating you want a vasectomy and see what happens., If they say no, ask to speak to the doctor in charge and explain you situation in full. If having heard it he says no then indeed, you are out of luck. But I would not base anything on what you get with a telephone inquery. AFAIK there is no legal requirement on this so it is possible for a doctor to do if he is satisfied that you know what you are doing and have fully thought it through.

This is not true. The first injection needs to be while she is on her cycle, not the follow up ones. If someone told you that, they are 100% mistaken. Further more, this would not even be possible because women who regularly get this shot stop having a cycle for often many months at a time. You just go back every 90 days to get it again. This is a fool proof method. The chance of getting pregnant with the Depo shot is statically insignificant. I have no clue why you want your scrotum cut open instead of your wife getting a simple and relatively painless shot 4 times a year. You are a braver man than me.......

His situation is more complicated than this. It is the GF who has irregular periods, the wife claims a fear of needles

Given the "complex" domestic situation he may also have reason to doubt the reliability/commitment of these two women in preventing pregnancy. I would, given the excuses offered and the likely jealousy factor.

I got one at Ramathibodi Hospital's new premium center (Somdech Phra Debaratana Medical Center).

Great place! The uroloigist is very ethical. At first he wouldn't give me one due to my young age, but when i went back again he agreed.

The precedure was a breeze, despite my fear. I didn't really feel anything after the injections. It took about 40 mins. He gave a load of pills to take away and gave me some advice.

Just stay off your feet for 24 hours and wear tight underwear for a week. No sport or sex for a week either.

It cost about 12k. I was very happy with it and no problems afterwards.

The tight underwear is important, BTW (wear them when you go to get your snip too.....trust me, you don't want your balls swinging around on the way home)

He uses the key-hole method. No stitches required. thumbsup.gif
