Popular Post toryboy1979
In a former life I had the pleasure to welcome Mr Gorbachev and his lovely Raisa wife to a book signing in London. Mr Gorbachev spoke little or no English but his wife did and she was very interested in the history of the building in which the book signing was taking place. My PR team wanted to take a picture of Mr Gorbachev and myself on his arrival but with a sweep of his hand he pronounced a definite 'No' and slightly concerned we had committed a PR faux pax proceeded into the building to continue the book signing. On the first floor landing of the building we had a very large painting of our Queen, Queen Elizabeth and as we climbed the stairs and the painting came into view, he turned to me and in broken English said 'Now photograph' which we duly did under the portrait of the Queen. He or one of his aides had clearly done their research.

Popular Post emilymat
Although Margret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan get all the credit for ending the cold war, without Gorbachev it would have taken for ever maybe. He had the courage to tell the East Germans they were on their own and that led, as we know, to the Berlin Wall coming down etc. He deserves more credit than he has received over the years. I understand, that he was a bit like Mrs Thatcher, in that he was admired abroad more than in his own country. ( I know Mrs T had many admirers in the UK but also many haters - if you like) I also think that Khrushchev wasn't so bad, under the façade of the shoe thumping etc. He was a peasant who rose through the ranks and still retained a lot of simple basics. Shame that poster got them mixed up and, before he points to the Cuban missile crisis, at least Mr K had the balls to accept Kennedy's offer in the face of his more militant members of the communist inner circle, who were responsible for the deployment of the missiles in the first place. Scary time for many of us eh.............. Hope Gorby hangs on.

super22k
I like Gorbachev because he brought out the human side of communism. Before him all we got from Soviet Presidents was,"Neit.neit.neit! At least he would listen and talk to people. But when I reminded my Russian girlfriend of this she replied angrily, "He broke up the Soviet Union!" to which I replied, "And the Berlin wall." Perhaps I'm wrong, but I think you've got it incorrect. Edited October 10, 2014 by IMA_FARANG
