I've just had an eye-opener of a discussion with my lady. It started with a little gossip about one of her friends who's just finished with her boyfriend after 18 months. My girl says her friend will find a new guy in no time because she's so hot. She's right. The girl is smokin.

Anyhoo, while discussing their break up, I suggested that the guy, a falang, would be able to to find another girl in no time too because he's quite well-off but my lady said "Maybe hooker but not like my friend".

I asked why she would say such a thing.

She said "You guys think its just money but is only like that with hookers.

I think it is fair to say that Thai's do in general try to, and do appreciate others that keep their appearance up. How the girls manage to shower and wash and do their hair and dress in the little apartment rooms they share with one or two others constantly amazes me. Look at them in the airports when traveling and compare to some of the backpack foreign slobs that arrive. Gosh, how can that look make a good impression?

Looks do matter, but not as much as you might think. Assuming you are not the Hunchback of Notre Dame or George Clooney (who just got married), looks are about 15-25% of the total equation.

The only truly tough break for your friend would be if he was a short man (by Western standards). Women prefer tall men like men prefer larger breasts. With Asians still generally smaller than their Western counterparts, your friend could be "too short" in SoCal but in the acceptable range for most Thai girls.

So what are the other factors?

• Confidence (the most important and at least 50% of the attractive equation)

• Style -- if your friend can take it a step up from the Farangs running around wearing Hawaiian shirts and flip-flops, he will make a better first impression. Science has shown that we (men and women) form opinions about one another within the first few seconds of an encounter. This is why clothing and color has placed such an important part of human history, especially in Asia. If your friend is getting complimented on his attire, he is doing it right.

• Fitness. A man should look and act like a man. Even an uglier man with some muscles is going to stand out against an average beanpole.

• Money. This one is more of a factor in Asia than in most Western nations. Of course, you will find gold diggers in every culture and for them money is 100% of the equation. Still, trying to buy her cheap street food and Tiger beers will only get you so far with a certain calibre of women. The rest will usually only manage to get hooked up with the dregs of Thai society, the types we frequently see when out and about with Thai women that look like women of ill repute on their days off or the Thai middle age women that have the appearance of a retired bar girl.

As regards having money, it all depends on what one would consider as being well off? Unless being extremely affluent, then it will more likely be a case of the farangs on mediocre budgets only being financially desirable to those of the underclasses of Thai society, who are more desperate, but as regarding being a viable proposition to Thai women of a more upmarket level, I think their chances are slim indeed as Thai society as a whole looks down on Thai women that are involved with farangs, even those who are considered as hansum man.

I generally agree with this statement. In fact, it is true around the world. Most Farang are dealing with a very small slice of the Thai pie, namely, bar girls or English teacher / English language groupies. This is still a minority of Thai society.

Nevertheless, it is truly just a "Numbers Game." If a Farang focuses on self-improvement in all aspects of his life and religiously approaches and makes contact with Thai girls day and night, from Koh San Rd to the Thai suburbs whether or not he believes he "has a shot," he will be rewarded with an insane amount of LoSo, Mid-So and HiSo Thai punnany.

There is absolutely no doubt in my mind and when a HiSo Thai girl sneaks over to your hotel or invites you out to the estate while hubby is away meeting the politicians, you too will believe. Now, getting a HiSo to tell her family that she is seeing a Farang -- totally different story.
