Southern school closes after teacher shot dead in class

NARATHIWAT: -- Gunmen burst into a southern classroom Monday and killed a teacher in front of his students.

Ban Bue Rang School in Rue Soe District of Thailand's southernmost province of Narathiwat announced an indefinite closure of the school after an unidentified gunman shot and killed the school's teacher while he was teaching.

The teacher, Prasarn Makchoo, died instantly in the student-filled classroom at Ban Bue Rang School Monday after being shot twice in the head by the gunman dressed in a student uniform.

According to police investigators, as the teacher was teaching his students, four men entered the school compound on two motorcycles.

The gunman came into class and shot Mr. Prasarn twice in his head in front of his students before fleeing.

Police believe that the shooting is in retaliation for the arrest last week of four key suspected insurgent leaders last week.

The insurgents had earlier failed to provoke villagers to gather at the police station and demand the release of the four detained suspects.

School kids see teacher murdered

Concerns over security for schools and villages as violence escalates

A gunman shot dead a primary school teacher in front of his entire class yesterday morning.

The attack has increased fears that the authorities are incapable of properly protecting teachers assigned to the restive region.

The gunman, who went to the school with three other assailants, shot Prasarn Makchoo, 46, a Thai language teacher at Ban Bue Rang School in Narathiwat's Rusoh district, at close range with a .38 pistol. The four had disguised themselves in student uniforms to enter the school area undetected.

Prasarn took two bullets to the back and one to the head, killing him instantly. An investigator said the teacher still held a piece of chalk in his hand.

Prasarn is the 44th teacher to have been killed by suspected Muslim militants since 2004, said Sa-nguan Jintarat, head of the Narathiwat Teachers Association.

The murder is embarrassing for the authorities, as it comes just two months after the failure of security officials to rescue two female teachers badly beaten by a group of young men in the village of Kuching Reupah. The drama occurred amid a tense stand-off between village defence volunteers and residents, who were demanding the release of two men arrested earlier in the day on charges of being members of an insurgent group looking to split the Malay-speaking region from Thailand.

Yesterday's attack infuriated Narathiwat Governor Pracha Therat, who suggested that village defence volunteers assigned to the school may have cooperated with the killers.

Pracha did not elaborate to support his claim, but said there would be a thorough background check of all security details, as well as an inquiry into their conduct and failure to stop the killing. Guards would be dealt with to the fullest extent of the law if found guilty, he warned.

Pracha ordered all 42 schools in Rusoh district to be closed temporarily.

Two village defence volunteers and four defence volunteers working for district chiefs were posted at the school at the time of the drama.

The whereabouts of the school guards at the time of the shooting was not clear but Pracha told reporters that they did not have their weapons with them.

"Much has been done to stop such incidents - yet it still took place. It shows that the security team at the school was not efficient," Pracha said.

Thai security and intelligence officials in the restive deep South have been strongly criticised for failing to curb the ongoing violence.

The murdered teach-er had worked at the school for more than 20 years. His body was taken to Wat Pairojcha-naram in Rusoh district.

Prasarn is survived by a son and a daughter. His wife, Panyaporn Makchoo, 45, works at the same school. More than 1,400 people have been killed in the region since early 2004.

How extremely tragic.... and yet, looking for a glimmer of something positive, it was a poetic exit for this 20-year teaching veteran. :o

Deepest sympathy to the teacher's family and to the suffering by the students for witnessing this horrific trauma right in front of them.

Tragic, Doing a great job and being gunned down in cold blood for it, The situation in the deep South has been out of control for a long time now and the government seem unable or unwilling to come up with any clear solutions or stratagies.

My thoughts go out to this man, his family and the poor kids who had to witness such a heinous crime.

Things are getting out of hand and escalating :o

Where are the authorities, what are they doing are there clues to who the real suspects are?

Its really disturbing and things are getting worse.

Of course those in charge of securities, especially the head honchos will claim everything is under control and will catch the killers. Meanwhile the killing continues and the local people must live in fear both from the authorities and the cold blooded murderers. Who's in charge? Certainly not the Generals right now its the extremists.

HMMMM! Shouldn't the word 'extremist' be changed to 'muslim' that we way we are in no doubt that yet more death has been dealt by the hand of those that follow the 'religion of peace'.

What do these 'people' have against teachers? Are they scared that they might undo the brainwashing that Islam requires?

Awful deeds by the most awful of people.

Can anyone shed any light on why they are setting fire to schools and attacking teachers ? Please enlighten me, I just don't get it...

Teachers are employees of the central BKK government, and the schools represent the central gov't. as well. Both are symbolic targets.

And they indoctrinate their children in Thai ways of life, distort the history and so on. Symbolic targets, I agree, though that particular teacher was probably not randomly selected.

I doubt students learn a great deal about democracy, self-determination, human rights and peaceful coexistence in Thai schools, or at least they don't pactice what they teach in the South.

So, in priciple, Thai education there is as evil as muslim pondoks.

The govt. seem able to use this as an excuse to legally launch phone-tapping and "eavesdropping" throughout the whole country. *Extra security measures against terrorism* Sound familiar?

Wonder if the Southern problems will continue if the Democrats get back in power?

The problems will lessen along with decrease in violence. Getting rid of the martial law imposed by authorities in Bangkok will definitely be a step in the right direction. :o

The initial problems seem to have stemmed from when the govt. disbanded some soldier (Rangers, i think) units that used to police the southern provinces.

They started using Thai police down there, and thats when the problems and violence started escalating. I wonder why? :D

This is certainly a horrible tragedy for the family of the dead teacher and all his young students, and all the kids in Narathiwat who will no longer be able to go to school. However, it is pointless and incorrect to blame all Muslims or Islam for the work of an extremist group. You could try reading the history of the southern states to understand the political issues as well as the religious ones.

The miltants\separatists\terrorists seem to be getting younger and younger. Apparently these killers were dressed up as schoolboys to avoid suspicion, didn't bother hiding their faces.

Most of those arrested lately seem to be in their late teens.

By shooting in the classroom in front of the kids they're telling the Buddhists in the deep south in a brutal way that they're not safe anywhere and should leave the area.

What percentage of Buddhists have left the 3 provinces in the last year? The statistics would be interesting.

The terrorists (I think that term is more accurate in this case than militant) have been targeting teachers because they are Thai, government employees and mostly Buddhist. In other words, they represent everything that the seperatists are fighting against.

This is not the first southern insurgency. The most recent uprising was in the '80's. It was defused when the Thai government responded with a carrot and stick approach: they let those provinces elect most of their officials and made the Thai government less obtrusive, while at the same time they hunted down insurgents.

Thaksin has been criticised for undoing all of the things that were done to end the previous insuruction.

every time it's extremism, militants, terrorists.

these people are living in a democratic society as in america europe and many parts of the world.

if i were to go to a school and shoot an unarmed teacher in front of school children i would be classed as a callous and cold blooded murderer.

that is how these sh+t faces should be classed

COLD BLOODED MURDRERS

and they should be hunted down and shot like the lowest form of life they are.

I even saw a remark about this killing on another forum, from somebody in America who heard of this heinous killing.

But this is far from the first such killing of teachers in the South - is it just the most cold-blooded one?

well it could be the worst as far as teachers go considering that it happened it front of the students as it will be with them for life.

dont know about you but id <deleted> myself when the lights went out let alown be witness to this sort of rubbish.

as far as being the most cold blooded one, the cutting of peoples heads of would have to take the cake would'nt it ?

big problems in the south that is the equall to the israily conflict and only getting worse.

im surprised that they have been able to contain it and it has'nt spread to other parts of southern thailand.

dont like to say it but im thinking its only a matter of time.

the government will really panic then as it will kill the tourist industry in about 2.5 milliseconds

this is a very intelligent reply fruittbatt to that clown (griffen) that posted THOSE extremely racist remarks of his.

obviously trolling for a bite as no one could be that stupid to place all muslims in the same box.

griffen = ( noun) monster with eagles head, wings, lions body and off extremely low intelligence.

got to be spot on does'nt it ?

hey griff, you got to get out a bit more old son as your doing yourself no favours by being real silly like that.

cheers old cods wallop.

Where to start? Here goes nothing.

Fruitbatt I have read plenty about the Pattani kingdom. I think the current inhabitants have some claim but the typical muslim response of violence is un-called for. Afterall Scotland was able to gain their own parliment without a shot. My point stands. Islam and its followers are violent people.

Mittheimp, Why am I a bigot? If one disagrees with bloodsports (as i do) is it correct for its proponents to call them bigots? My point stands. Islamists are the most narrow minded people

Terry!! I saved you till last. Please inform me of which 'RACE' I offended by my anti-islamic remarks? (you come across as a right <deleted>)

You looked up the meaning of a mythological beast and tried to connect my views of the un-real with your own views. Well done!

Ok so lets presume my anti-islamic remarks are un-true! Woud someone please expalin to me the problems of Egypt, Oman, Russia, Britain, Egypt, Thailand, Israel, America, Spain, Holland, Australia, Canada, Iraq, Iran, Somalia, Palestine, Libya the list goes on and on. Any country that hosts muslims has a muslim problem.

I look forward to your answers.

Lets give the last word to the president of Malaysia (a muslim from a muslim land. lest i be called a bigot) "while not all muslims are terrorists, almost all terrorists are muslims"

Griffin, I am relieved to know that you are literate, at least. I have included a bit of a reading list below rather than trying to answer all your complex questions regarding the histories and politics of such diverse areas of the world. Hope it keeps you and your big Muslim-beating baton off the streets for a few decades. :o Oh, and it was really personal attack against Terry. He, like all of us, is entitled to state his views without being insulted in such a mindless and sexist way...Here's your library list: enjoy!

Edward Said: Orientalism: Western Conceptions of the Orient

ditto Culture and Imperialism

ditto The Question of Palestine

ditto The End of the Peace Process

ditto The Politics of Dispossession

Noam Chomsky Middle East Illusions

any other recent Chomsky texts

B.J.Terwiel Thailand's Political History

....when you've read that lot, get back to me and let me know you're thoughts :D

thanks for saving me till last griffen as i thrive on people like yourself who obviously ar'nt stupid but say some very silly things that will offend the majority of people.

first of all i will apologise to you for saying those negative things to your self as ive only lowered myself down to your level and im a bit disappointed that ive been drawn in by your dribble.

as far as offending the majority goes, i have no problem with that as long as one is speaking the truth as it is a weakness to try and make people happy just to placate them.

the problem with your post griffen is that you have made a blanket statement condeming all muslims.

can someone out there please tell me if im barking up the wrong tree as im sure thats what griffen's post was infering ?

you ask me to clarify which race you are offending ?

just hang on for about 1 millisecond whilst i ponder my answer as id hate to come over like a right <deleted> again. break my bleed'n heart that would.

yep think ive got the answer old mate.

"MUSLIMS" HAS TO BE THE CORRECT ANSWER AND IM ###### PROUD OF MY SELF I'D WORKED THAT ONE OUT.

here is another bit of brain busting rocket science to back up my last bit of frigging common scense.

" muslims follow the islamic religion "

you stated "QUOTE" ( islamists are the most narrow minded people.)

dont know about you griff but thats telling me something about you mind process and im sure all the other posters are picking up the same vibe.

by the way thats why were all comming down on you old son .

in conclusion :

A. YOUR POST WAS RACIST.

B. you need to take a bex, have a nice lay down and maybe your brain can process what you have put into words.

C. thanks for giving me the opportunity to make a few things crystal clear.

D. this is a democratic forum and you are well entitled to your opinion but for god's sake griff your post was a load of bollics.

cheers old mate :D

Ok! Chaps. While I do feel I am correct I am willing to entertain other ideas.

While I insist that my remarks are very anti-islamic they are not racist. To this end I feel I should not have reffered to Terry as a '<deleted>'. In fact I doubt that he is as his posts suggest he is a pretty normal guy. In fact we may be the same people that share a coffee every morning. But to be fair muslims are not a race. Sorry mate!

Fruitbatt! Thanks for the reading list. I promise to look some of those books up. May I suggest you read other books that are less biased towards the cause of Islam. For instance Google 'mohammed and aisha' and learn about how the prophet raped a 9 year old girl.

The only person I can't work out how to build bridges too is Mittheimp. From what you say anybody that disagrees with anyone is a bigot. I disagree with hunting animals for fun. I can not see the fun in it. Therefore I am a horrible bigot. really? That sounds dumb!

I am willing to say that not EVERY Muslim is a terrorist, but a large enough group are to warrant us being wary of them all. In the way that not all soi dogs are rabid monsters, but we do watch em'

The attacks on schools and teachers show a fundamental difference in perception of the world. I,like most of us, see teachers as the people that enable our kids to view the world. Muslims in many countries try and smother any kind of learning. Therefore they condemn themselves to backward ignorance.

I never intended to offend anyone that reads this site. If you ask me to say I am wrong then you are asking too much.

Just open any newspaper on any day and see why I think the way I do. Just for fun.....did you know there are 60 plus Muslims in jail awaiting trial in the UK for terrorist cimes.

I hope this will bring this squabble to an end.

Griffin
