It's the cost of an average property in cities like London and New York. Tens of millions of people own such properties around the world. It's not surprising that some of them may be in Thailand.

You do realize that by changing the guidelines to include equity in real estate, you're making many of the people reading this thread (not the TV community) richer and the poorest 50% are even poorer than you thought.

Difficult blow when content with fun 'entertainment' value, is so misunderstood and under-appreciated.

Over 2 million British people have a net worth of over $1 million. I'm sure plenty of them are here, as I know a few personally. If you met them I doubt you'd think there were millionaires because their income is average but their assets are large, mainly due to them being older, having paid off their mortgages and their properties having risen in value. And they've had longer to build their savings and see their investments grow. In SE England the average family home is probably worth close to $800K. Add in some saving and investments and $1 million is easily achieved. Over 2 million managed to achieve it, so it's not really something too out of the ordinary.

If I look at that link I think it has some use when one wants to consider how it contributes to living in Thailand, but context is all.

There are two terms used there: assets and liabilities.

If one has a home, say in UK, then financially it is to all intents and purposes a liability re the costs of maintenance if it still remains a home. However it is an asset at the point of disposal and an asset if rented out. While I was working I was happy for the value of my home to increase in nominal terms over a long period of time, but once career stopped it felt more like a liability. As for including either my old stamp collection (yes, still got it) or art prints, I am loathe to consider assets of wealth (even though each having a perceived value), though at some point I will have to sell them.

You could do it both ways if you wish ... for your own consideration of any differences.

I found the poll entertaining and the results plausible. In a voluntary poll on wealth it is to be expected that those who participate will be more successful than those who do not. There are certainly dollar millionaires here at TV. Although there may well be some who exaggerated their wealth the benefit of doing so anonymously escapes me.

Even for entertainment purposes wealth should include real estate. The reason that brokerage firms like Merrill Lynch and Credit Suisse often make estimates of liquid wealth is that, ultimately, those reports will be used for prospecting for assets to manage, i.e. cash and securities. For the rest of us real estate counts.

As I remember about 7% of the US households have a net worth >= $1 million. 8% of New York City. 10% of Singapore. Someone else reported here the claim that Thailand has a mere 77,000 dollar millionaires. If so, that's only 0.12%. Sounds low to me, but I can't find a source for any such number.
