YANGON, 17 October 2014: Myanmar will designate 2016 as “Visit Myanmar Year” to boost tourism.
Irrawaddy, a respected local media channel, quoted Hotels and Tourism deputy minister Tin Shwe as saying the country hopes to celebrate the Visit Myanmar Year in 2016.

“Tourism accommodation is expanding and there will soon be enough suitable places for foreign tourists to stay,” he said.
“Currently, there are around 1,100 hotels in the country, 267 hotels in Yangon with over 12,000 rooms, so it is not difficult to implement the Visit Myanmar Year in 2016,” he said, “The tourism sector needs to be promoted more than at present in order to improve foreign exchange income.”
According to the deputy minister, the planned year-long tourism promotion campaign fits well with the Myanmar Tourism Master Plan 2013 to 2020, a policy developed with support of international donors that sets out a strategy to develop the sector through focusing on areas such as training for tourism sector workers, developing tourism destinations, and addressing problems in connectivity and communication in the country
