Of Resorts; experiences of their variety and purpose!

We travel about Thailand a great deal.We don't like large hotels, nor Chinese ones. So when we come to a town we look for a 'Resort' in which to stay. For preference it is reasonably tranquil, by a river or on the outskirts of town though they also exist 'centre ville'. We have grown increasingly wondering about these places! In Lanna there are plenty of quite luxurious Resorts. Elsewhere of queerly different qualities. We have learned to, obviously, avoid anything with curtains over the parking lot and those which look rows of Nissan huts; also those advertising 'Open 24 hours' and 'Rooms 180B an hour'! We were in Uttardit the other day and could not find one which was not one of those!

Even so we have made mistakes! So dear members, how from the highway do you discern a 'Resort' which is a 'Resort'? Has anyone any light to shed on this?!! Or experiences to share?!
