Voluntary Teaching In Bkk

Featured Replies

I want to do some voluntary teaching and hoping someone on here can point me advice. Would I need to do a TEFL course? How would I find schools that are in need of teachers?

I can spare a day or so a week and think it would be a great experience for me… and the students!

I’m great with kids, my mom adopts so have always had children of all ages around me and I can adapt well to most situations.

I’d really appreciate any advice from the fellow teachers on this forum.

It all depends how seriously you want to take things.

There are LOADS of potential students out there for your volunteer work- I'm constantly getting asked by well-meaning acquaintances to "teach them English," presumably for free, as if it were more acceptable to ask me for free services than, say, any other service professional. You could always hang out with some of this crowd (mostly adults of all ages).

On the other hand, if you're looking for a more formal, classroom experience (or you really want to work with kids rather than adults), I'd say you should march into any local public elementary school or high school and simply propose what you're available for to the English teachers there. Chances are they're not going to look a gift horse in the mouth too closely.

If you want to do the most good, I'd suggest going to the schools located closest to the poorest parts of your community, who probably would have no other way to get a foreign English teacher to work there.

If you're very serious about this, a TEFL would certainly help both you and your students, although it seems a bit costly to pay for one simply so you can work for free. It may, however, make *you* feel more comfortable about what you're doing, initially. Later, you will learn from experience as you go.

Good luck- and if you would, please let us know how things work out! We get requests like this here once in a while, but I don't think we've heard back from anyone who did it....
