How much should we pay the nanny

Featured Replies

We live in Issan and my wife wants to return to part time work sometimes. Im ok to assist looking after the baby but feel more confident with help from a nanny. We have interviewed someone and when asking how much she wants she said the usual 'its up to you'.

Wages in Issan are low of course. She said she can cook, look after baby and clean. How much an hour is reasonable in your opinion. She might do a 5 hour shift on average

thanks for your opinion on this.

The national minimum wage/day is 300 baht, right? Assuming an 8-hour day, that's 37.5 baht per hour. For a 5-hour day that amounts to 187.50 baht. So I would guess that is your minimum, altho it sounds a bit on the low side. People who employ nannies in Isaan will be able to tell you.

referances first, find out as much as you can about her, dont forget you are going to trust her with your child.

so pay her well say 400bht-500bht a day,but for a week or two OBSERVE, and test.

200 baht a day for that amount of hours. Paying over the odds can have a detrimental effect where both working and respect is concerned with some natives. The 'up to you' means you tell me and then I'll let you know after if it's under what I think.

I agree - 200 baht per day would seem to be a very good wage for part time work. But you should also supply food.\

I suspect 200 baht would be considerably more than most are paying - more in line with normal Bangkok prices actually. But if working 5 hours may not have chance for other employment so could justify for that reason.

Normal payment would be monthly amount or twice a month rather than a daily wage.

what kind of detrimental effect are you talking about.

this person is goner be looking after your child, unless the op is goner be observing her every minute.

if its smeone who is good at her work then pay her whats its worth to you.

at sometime she will be left on her own,so then the trust kicks in.

Thanks for the replies.

I think that 200 baht for a 5 hour day is the best guess as I remember my mother in law telling me months ago that she might work 250 for a slightly longer day

Nannies in most countries are paid better than the lowest paid agricultural and factory workers. You are trusting someone with your house and valuables (indeed the most valuable of your valuables). I would offer at least 300 baht for a 5 hour session. Depends whether you are asking "what is the least I can get away with", in which case 200 would probably work.

Spot on with all salient points.

.

Just for more reference for you, I lived in Isaan for a year and a half and employed a nanny full time, M-S from 7am to 5pm. We paid her 10,000 THB monthly. If we needed her to work Sunday, we paid her 300 THB for the day (usually 8-5). She was paid more than other nannies we knew in the area and considered herself well-paid. She was wonderful and I would recommend her if she didn't already have another job. I think 200 THB per day for the hours you are asking for is spot on.
