Jerusalem car 'attack' kills baby at rail station

JERUSALEM: -- A three-month-old girl was killed and eight other people were injured when a car hit them at a Jerusalem tram stop.

Police say the driver was a Palestinian from East Jerusalem. He was shot by officers as he tried to run away and later died of his injuries in hospital.

Officials say they are treating it as a "terrorist attack" and that the suspect had previously served time in an Israeli prison "for terrorism".

Local media report that the suspect's teenage brother has been arrested.

The baby girl and her parents were US citizens, Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat told the Associated Press news agency.

East Jerusalem has experienced months of unrest since a Palestinian teenager was abducted and burned to death in early July, two days after the discovery of the bodies of three Israeli teenagers who were abducted and killed in the occupied West Bank in mid-June.

The killings set off an escalating cycle of violence, leading to a 50-day conflict between Israel and Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip that claimed more than 2,000 lives.

Israel's Netanyahu accuses Abbas over Jerusalem car attack

JERUSALEM: -- Israeli leader Benjamin Netanyahu has accused the Palestinian president of incitement, after an attack which killed a baby in Jerusalem.

Mr Netanyahu said Mahmoud Abbas had provided encouragement for incidents such as the killing of the three-month-old by a Palestinian driver.

The man drove his car into a crowd at a tram stop, injuring eight others. He died hours after being shot by police.

A spokesman said the incident was being treated as a "terrorist attack".

"The driver... is a resident of [the East Jerusalem neighbourhood of] Silwan and has a terrorist background. He served time in jail for terror activity," Micky Rosenfeld was quoted by Reuters news agency as saying.

Bar down fellas, bar down. Appears to me the term 'terrorist' or 'terrorist attack' is the only word or term they are quoting from whatever source they have.

They've also used the word terrorist without the offending ' '.

For a second though there was a JJT - teabagger unity ticket...

But I'll grab my coat now.

What's wrong with the BBC? Why did they put "terrorist" in quotes?

Maybe because 5-8 year olds are arrested for same charges.
They can drive cars into babies?

No. If BBC don't have enough evidence/information about the incident and don't want to speculate.

Could be a legitimate accident and person run out of fear of being lynched by the mob. I doubt that thou.

Knowing about previous "terrorist" accusations and incarceration with "benefits" ,I think it was one man's retaliation .

Terrible waste, innocence paying for adults greed and intolerance.

Nice to see BBC seeing the whole picture and not picking sides.

Was not an accident if you see footage on youtube.

There is no footage when the car stopped and he tried to flee.

Police shot him down with one shot followed with 3 shots when he was laying alive on the ground.

Great police work...

Because "Terrorist attack" is part of a direct quote?

Predictable reaction to this TERRORIST ATTACK (no quotes) from the two major Palestinian political factions --

Hamas and Fatah.

Reportedly the terrorist attacker is a member of Hamas, the well known Palestinian terror organization which rules in Gaza and is the most popular political organization among Palestinians overall.

Meanwhile, Abbas’s Fatah faction published a poster depicting Abdel Rahman al-Shalodi, the Palestinian behind Wednesday’s terrorist attack in Jerusalem, as a “hero and martyr.” Fatah activists in al-Shalodi’s neighborhood of Silwan distributed the poster, which hailed him for carrying out an attack on “settlers in occupied Jerusalem.”

...
Hamas, for its part, praised the terrorist attack, saying al-Shalodi was a member of the Islamist movement.

Hamas said that the “brave” attack was a “natural and expected response to growing Israeli violations against Palestinians and their holy sites.”

BBC reported first that it was a car accident.

They quoted in order to update/correct in later articles...

BBC showing an anti-Israel bias.thumbsup.gif

The original AP news was actually MUCH much worse. Suggesting those darned Israelis just shot a random Arab man for no reason.

It led with:

Israeli police shoot man in east Jerusalem

That was later corrected. But the original headline was the one that was mostly picked up internationally because it was the first.

In any case, the subject here is the recent terror attack in Jerusalem including the glorification of this terrorist by Hamas and Fatah. Trying to change the subject is an obvious ploy.

I hope it's OK to say this ... in my opinion saying the "Zionist state of Israel is a monster" is hate speech and it IS directed at Jews, pure and simple, and what is Zionism but the liberation movement of the Jewish people towards political self determination.
