Is there any rule how much time you must have in your passport before it expire? When you apply for the 12 months extension of stay.

No, but the extension is not given beyond the expiry date of your passport. Before your passport expires you must get a new one and than apply for a new extension of stay with all required documents and fee.

No!

In the past if you had less than a year left on your current passport they would give you an extension to the expiration of your passport. After you came back with a new passport and transferred your stamps, they would give you the balance of your 1 year extension.

They changed that rule. If you apply for an extension with less than 1 year left on your passport you will only get an extension that expires when the passport expires. They do not give you the balance of the 1 year when you have your stamps transferred to your new passport, you have to apply for a new extension when the current one expires!

So if you only have 8 months left on your passport, you will only get an 8 month extension and will have to apply for a new extension at the end of the 8 months, the extra 4 months will no longer be added when you have your stamps transferred.

As said, you only get the extension up to the date of passport expiry.

After that you have to start again with your new passport.

It depends upon the country. For some you need 6 months remaining on your passport. But for those from most western countries and others you only need passport validity equal to or greater the your allowed stay.

You probably did your extension before August 13 of last year when the new rule started or shortly after before the local office started enforcing it.

Those that did their extensions before that date still got the remainder of their extensions after they got new passports.

I had noproblem entering Thailand with less than 6 months on passport, the officer at Swampy also pointed out that all expired in Dec. I said thank you and all will be renewed by Nov. he stamped me in no futher questions.

But why delay it? At the 6 month point you cannot enter many countries including all ASEAN countries other than here if you are from certain countries.

I did my passport 9 months early and it worked out to about $6 lost figuring what that passport cost to get.

The UK will give up to 9 months of validity from the old passport back on the new one.

Since immigration will reintegrate the complete extension duration on the new passport, and the service is freen, the only drawback is an additional visit to Immigration.

It is if you want to get the extension for an entire year to save doing the extension process again in a few months.

When you go back to do an extension of the shortened one it will be a one year extension from the date that extension ends.. All your future extensions will be due on that date.

Every individual will have to assess their own time frame for Passport renewal or extension renewal, depending on which will gain or lose the most if your in that situation.

My extension renewals are due end of April, my Passport runs out in the month of July 2018.

I'll get my 12 month extension of April 2017, then apply for a new passport around January 2018.

I don't lose anything because up to 9 months can be carried forward to my new passport (UK).

So I'll have new passport at hand for the 2018 extension.

Can an extension of stay be done at an immigration office that is not in the Province of the applicants residence? For example could a Hua Hin resident do his extension in Chiang Mai?
