How wrong I was. It seems it's being ruined by idiots who just waste everyones time. :o

Indeed.

Theres an ignore feature, you can use that if Ringhole is getting on your wick... altho i dont think he will be with us for much longer... judging by recent events.

Wolfie or any mod/admin.

Can you now change the title of the sub-forum World Cup 2006, to say "The Football" forum.

Cheers :D

It should be called "Canadian Football, modified and dumbed down for Americans" :D

(Though it is much more entertaining to watch than Baseball :D ).

No where near as good as hockey though. Fast action, hard hitting, tough guys, and once in awhile they stop fighting and actually play the game ! :D

Footie tends to be very boring for the North American audience in general. A game that goes for 90+ minutes and ends in a 0-0 draw hardly gets the blood stirring (though in some countries they'd be parading through the streets in celebration of another wonderful 0-0 draw !) :o

Remember that America is the place that decided that there weren't enough 100 point+ scores in Basketball games, so they changed the rules in an effort to get those high scores.

They tried pro-Soccer in North America (there is still a pro league running). But even in places like New York city, they weren't drawing enough crowds to make it worthwhile.

Just too ###### boring. Just like Baseball. Or Golf. Or Synchronized Swimming :D

Why do they have to dress up in 'megga' body armour, are they all 'whimps' or pansies . Not tough enough to take a little body contact ?

Aussie rules is a good one. (and I'm not Aussie). I like the blood rule--if you are bleeding you have to get off. And thats about it

Now, there is a tough sport. Little tank tops and short shorts are about all the protection these guys have. Nice viewing too :o

You guys who say American Football is a wimp's sport wouldn't be saying that if you tried it for yourselves! I have to agree about rugby though, it's a REALLY tough sport; my buddy from NZ says guys get their ears bitten off in the pile. Now that would be a perfect sport for Mike Tyson. Soccer is a gentleman's game played by hooligans and rugby is a hooligan's game played by gentlemen :o

Muay Thai is a tough sport of course, but the old style (Muay Khaad Cheuk) which uses only handwraps is even tougher. These bare knuckle contests are held frequently in the Issan part of Thailand and also in neighboring Myanmar (where headbutts are allowed). I have friends who did it and they all agree it makes quick work of your face.

American football is a wimps sport, take the padding off and tackle like real men. Just look at rugby league and union...

....those of you saying American Football is a soft game because of the padding should take time out and learn more about the sport.

I had the same thoughts until watching a doc on JIM BROWN, a fullback for the Cleveland Browns, when he was running with the ball his opponents suffered all sorts of injuries including broken ribs and noses.

You will find these players suffer more injuries than even Rugby players.

Well I think the guy should respond to his topic after three pages of posts.

And I'll add...rugby yeah right! :o I gave a brief history of the sport in Bedlam. I think the UKrs quite enjoyed it. :D

Oh, I thought you knew already aughie?

I think half the reason for the injuries is the padding itself plus the massive unhealthy steroid fed sizes these guys are getting to. If they had to run both ways like in rugby, they would be smaller, more agile and they wouldn't be running unprotected knee or ribs into rock hard helmet like they do.

There are some very athletic guys on the field in AF, but also what looks like a few fat massive lard piles loaded up on steroids. Not that this doesn't have atheleticism; they are very skilled at what they do, but they would probably die if they had to play for more than a few seconds at a time. Which is probably why so many AF players die at early ages; not exactly a healthy sport I would have thought.

By comparison, even though I am a rugby fan (and Muay Thai and boxing then some other minority sports) how can anyone say soccer is stupid?

1. You need a ball, and that is about it, so anyone in the world with a ball can play. No need to pads, and about 20 extra players to play in the 3 AF teams

2. It is a good test of skill and fitness; being a great player (like any sport including AF and 'real football i.e. rugby') requires fitness, skill, vision and some element of luck

3. It has a following around the world as opposed to 1/2 the world (rugby) or 1 country (AF)

4. Agree a bit about the scoring, but then again I watch and appreciate yacht match racing - not everything has to have 100 points in it - watch for the skill and vision, not the scoreline alone

5. You don't need to lose your teeth to do the sport (as opposed to say ice hockey, where no teeth and being Canadian seem to help create winners :-)

6. Many countries are in the hunt for the world cup; AF has 1, and rugby has about 5 that could win at the most. And that's counting a few northern hemisphere teams, who realistically will probably not win again for like, ever

Original poster, better to have people wonder if you are a moron, than post drivel like this, and confirm it.

Perfectly put.

After watching a couple of world cup games it was painfully obvious as to what state this game has become.

Playing for free kicks by dramatically falling to the ground whenever a defender came close and thrashing around on the ground in aparent agony until they give you a free then you are suddenly fine again....

The italians appear to be the masters of this.

It would have made the whole thing more interseting if there was an award for this, like a best on feild type of thing.

At least the players of other forms of football just get back on their feet and get on with the game, unless you can see evidence of their suffering.

Well you see it is on at the same time as soap operas. And in order that people can understand, it is necessary to demonstrate the possibility of significant injury with every single fall. And further more, if is necessary to demonstrate the angst of missing every single slightly close to the goal shot.

Hence the miraculous recovery, which is only matched in speed by the pace at which the non existant injury occurs and resultant pained expressions.

Honestly, it is embarrassing; at least EPL is marginally better; especially the derbies where sometimes the genuine pain gets sucked up by players who are 'hard'.

Not often though.....

Steve, incredibly nice to find somebody skiing in here :D . Just wanted to know, where is the nearest snowskiing resort to Thailand? Japan? I thought of that but I think it will be kind of expensive. USA??? Better flying to Austria :D I've been a member of the romanian junior national team for 7 years, unfortunately I think there are 3 or 4 years since I last stepped foot on a skiing slope :o

IMHO the OP is sort of right and I agree with him now.

You have 22 overpaid contractors kicking a bag of wind around a field and their acting skills leave a lot to be desired. Football/soccer used to be very good and entertaining quite a few years ago but now it is just a job where the best "players" get ludicrous amounts of money for working 2 hours a week.

Personally I prefer WWE American wrestling where if nothing else the acting skills are higher.

Well of course, you have to be a really tough man to play Rugby League or Union, as for more injuries ...i wonder ? because if they get more injuries with all tha 'pansie padding' they must be carrying concealed weapons in it .

The AUSTRALIAN snowfields are only about 10 hrs from Bangkok ! thats closer than Austria.

Yep Australia is 10 hours, but Australian snow is nothing to write home about; New Zealand flights are about 11 hours to AKl, then an hour connection to Queenstown or Christchurch, both significantly better than anything in Oz.

Remarkables

Treble Cone

Cardrona

All not bad.

Alternatively, can drive to Mt Ruapehu WHakapapa and Turoa; both nice terrain; similar to the Sierra Nevada area in USA without trees, however bad weather and inconsistent snow, like Australia in some ways.

Northern Hemisphere:

China

Nepal

Japan

Korea

Only Japan and Korea have good infrstructure; Japan is the best by far, also expensive, but some great carving there. Romania may actually be quite a bit cheaper than any of these other choices? Japan and Korea 6 hours flight about plus 4 hours drive to the resort.

USA Tahoe is great and cheap because you can stay in Reno which is a casino town and hence very cheap; about 12 hours to LA these days, 1 hour to Reno, then drive to the mountain is about 1 hour:

Squaw

Alpine Meadows

Kirkwood

Mount Rose

also some people like these ones (but not me)

Heavenly

Northstar

I am ex university level snowboard racer, but that was 10 years ago now... still great to enjoy the slopes :-)
