will2003 Posted July 30, 2006 Posted July 30, 2006 Anyone with any opinion? My Thai wife and myself will be spending the next few years here in Australia building up the nest egg before my “retirement” at around 65 (shudder). We will move back to Thailand permanently at this time. My wife will have her own business in Thailand and I would like to consider teaching as a second or third income stream (after completing TEFL Certificate) I have recently (2003) completed a Bachelor of Business Degree (Commercial Computing/e-Commerce) so I am certainly not adverse to the challenges of teaching. I would like any opinion on my chances of teaching given that I will be around 65. Any ideas as to what schools would accept this new recruit would be also appreciated. When we return we will be based in either Bangkok or perhaps Chonburi to be closer to family. Cheers

If you read a list of ads in Thailand, you'd think they never hire anybody over 40. Retirement age in government schools is 60. But that's no cause for discouragement; I started here at age 60. You are expected to list your age, or tell them, and provide a recent photo. So, your CV should say you're active, dynamic, energetic, leap tall buildings at a single bound, etc.A recently earned degree should be a plus; mine was irelevant and ancient when they hired me. Some employers will throw your application in the trash bin without a second thought; don't worry about that. Just sell yourself to the ones who contact you. And some schools will contact you. Good luck.
Ijustwannateach Posted July 30, 2006 Posted July 30, 2006 As far as I know, you won't be allowed to work at many government-related positions, as there is a mandatory age limit for the work permit process (60 yo). However, many people and schools here are not exactly sticklers for the paperwork, so you will probably find something, especially if you know the right people, whoever they are. "Steven"
kenkannif Posted July 31, 2006 Posted July 31, 2006 You'll be fine although as IJWT says it's hard to be legit at 'proper' schools once you hit a certain age....although not impossible. One of our best teachers is in his 70's!!! So you will be able to get something.
