Temperatures to drop and scattered thunderstorms expected in Thailand

BANGKOK, 31 October 2014 (NNT) - The Meteorological Department revealed that Thailand’s northern region would face cooler temperatures, whereas the eastern, central, and southern regions would be hit by scattered rains.

According to the department, a high-pressure cell currently covering northern and northeastern Thailand is starting to weaken. As a result, the temperatures in these regions will likely drop and foggy conditions are expected in the morning.

Meanwhile, an eastern trough covering the eastern, central, and southern regions will bring scattered thunderstorms to these areas from November 1-4.

In addition, another strong intensity high-pressure cell will be coming in from China and cause the country’s northern region to face another round of thunderstorms.

Temperatures are also expected to drop by 3-5 degrees Celsius. Bangkok and its vicinity on the other hand, will face cloudy skies and rains up to 40 percent throughout the country.

Temperatures are expected to hover between 25-26 degrees Celsius at minimum and 32-34 degrees at maximum. Wind speeds are expected to reach 15-30 kmph.

Max. temps of 32-34 are quite normal this time of year. So what's this 3-5 degree "drop" in temperature all about? Are they really saying that temperatures were up to 39 degrees up until now? In late October temperatures as high as the middle of the hot season in April or May? Surely not.

If the temperatures dropped by 3-5 degrees depending on whether we're talking min. or max. temps, but most likely max. I'd say anything from 27-31 degrees would be what they should be quoting. However, as even the min. temps are still quite high i.e. 25-26 degrees, I think that this "temperature drop" is nonsense. It sounds to me like typical weather for this time of year. However, I recall a broadcaster on a Thai TV station as quoting that "the presence of rain in Bangkok this time of year is quite unusual". When in fact it's very normal - it's the end of the rainy season and just like in previous years where after the end of the main monsoon around late September/early October, a week or two of mainly dry and mostly sunny weather in mid-October is followed by sunny mornings and then stormy afternoons/evenings well into November - in 2012, there seemed to be a lot of rain throughout the entire month. Only by late November/early December is mainly dry weather virtually guaranteed up until February or March, at least in Bangkok.

I don't think you read it correctly.

They way I read it, they expect a drop of 3-5 deg in N and NE, while Bangkok "on the other hand" shall not experience this drop (minima will stay at 25-26) but see rather an increased chance of rain and windy conditions.

This said, even with 5 degree less in max temperature in N and NE, it won't be cold or even chilly. If they mention it, I think, it's to make sure that people don't accuse them later in case the drop is bigger than expected.

"Bangkok and its vicinity on the other hand, will face cloudy skies and rains up to 40 percent throughout the country." so that makes it all crystal clear...
