Army arms civil volunteers in South with 2,700 service pistols

A handgun is only effective in the hands of experienced shooters, anything over 25ms away forget it!!

Unless these volunteers are going to be on the ranges firing thousands of rounds weekly, they are never going to be effective shooters.

Even doing close protection in such areas unless your on the ranges regularly then skill fade creeps in, then throw in the obvious that the bad guys have been doing this longer, and are better armed with assault rifles that are effective up to 450-600M then you have a problem !!!

Arming civilians volunteers isn't the answer, the answer is quite blatantly simple, get the Army to start doing the job THEY are trained and paid for !!

Where did it mention handguns?

In the article it said "Heckler & Koch HK33 assault rifles" . . . hardly a handgun . . .

Actually, the update post 56 says:

"Some 2,700 Heckler & Koch HK33 assault rifles have been distributed over the past two months to volunteers in the region, according to a spokesman for the Internal Operations Security Command (ISOC)."

Although somewhat different "mechanically" these would be similar in function to a fully automatic M16 firing 5.56 NATO ammo. This is the German version of the assault rifle.

"Minimal restrictions made it possible that by the year 2000, approximately 4 million firearms were legally purchased and registered. Experts say that actually no one really knows how many firearms, legal or illegal, are in the country."

However, one can assume that 14 years after the old statistics and the turmoil of the recent past there are a lot more weapons in the country. Especially since the numbers of newly registered weapons in the period 2000 to 2002 reached 158.983! Just estimate the increase for the last 12 years

Now Im waiting for the TAT to twist the news into a phrase highlighting tourists safety.

And a very good solid and reliable weapon it is too, HK know how to put together good assault rifles indeed.

Thank you for the update and the original post was for 2700 HANDGUNS for those getting their panties in a twist ?

My original statement still applies, even more so given they have high velocity assault weapons instead!!!

Shotguns would be better, needs less training, and more accurate.

Cheap to do, but they are ineffective at distances over 25-50m depending on the slug you're using, the smaller the pellet, the greater the spread the more effectiveness at middle range, ideal for game birds, not human beings some wearing body armour too.

Don't know about you mate, I prefer a weapon that can reach out and touch that someone special you have your sights fixed upon !! ?

What a great idea to spark a real, full-blown civil war in the south...

Give guns to people who can't handle them. Things will undoubtedly turn quite messy but that ought to keep them busy while we military keep playing play golf and the move will be applauded by the ignorant masses as us eventually doing something.

Is this their vision of fixing the southern insurgency in one year? That's got to work, for sure.

99.99% of the attacks are made by Muslims people on the Thai people.

Arming the Muslim will just see more weapon being pass to the Muslim people.

So only Thai people needed to be provided with free armed, not the Muslims.

If these Muslims people are not happy to live in Thailand under the care of the nation's father, they are free to return to their Muslim country just south of the border.

Since General Prayuth came into power as Prime Minister, The Muslims has behave rather well. Not much news of bombing/killing these days.

Mods, this is blatant trolling !!!!

Chothee try holding the newspaper up the right way and you will see that 3 people gunned down in the last week, and 6 schools razed to the ground in the past 3 weeks.

Yes the General did a sterling job down there when he was in command didn't he stop the war because Chuck Norris was unavailable?

I hope they were all vetted against having any criminal backgrounds too?
Arming civilians is never a good idea it turns them into vigilantes and anyone with a personal agenda can say I was just doing my duty

How do you vet the background of an insurgent who has no criminal record? Insurgents are typically civilians having the same ethnicity as the general population. Could be that Thailand just armed a new insurgency.

2,700 pistols being sent south.

I'm guessing the next yellow mob is going to be much better armed than the PDRC was, and that's really saying something.

The yellows must also be running low on grenades after 204 days of Suthep and co blowing BKK up.

Expect a few hundred launchers to be added to the list

Almost all the terrorist that have been caught doing the bombing were red. There were red training camps too. The reds were the ones that gunned down the kids in Trad while their leaders cheered on stage until someone smart told them this was bad PR and they had to shut up.

So far the Yellow mob has always been more peaceful as the red mob. There have been idiot guards but they have been dealt with. They were not hidden away by the government like the reds did with their terrorists.

Yellows don't need guns.. they got the army in their corner if push comes to shove.

Aaahh... They've got the army in their corner.

Your revelation fully explains where Suthep got all the M79 grenades from and why all the arrests have been so one sided.

You don't even have a gun, yet you've managed to shoot yourself in the foot.

Well done!

Refer to the Deep South Watch website for statistical data on who is getting killed. You'll see your 99.99% exaggerestimate is way off.

"The Yellow Mob?" Can you say "Tak Bai" three times in a row without choking on your tongue... You haven't a clue about the South do you?

Do not be hard on the guy, obviously colour blind... whistling.gif

I am more worried they will fall in to the hands of kids.

Tak Bai killings is a result of Thaksin (the fugitive) order.

Supreme leader General Prime Minister Prayuth the Great would only order more love and happiness; not killings.

This kind of guns ?

To replace some of its current inventory of M16A1 rifles, The Royal Thai army purchased three batches of TAR-21 rifles for USD27.77 million (THB 946.99 million) and approved delivery of a fourth batch on 15 September 2009, bringing the total to more than 58,000 TAR-21 rifles. ( WiKi )

Made in Israel

That is technically (and obviously) an assault rifle. The post said "service pistols." Read Colt 1911, Beretta M9/Model 92, Glock 17, CZ75 etc. Did you (1) not read the post or (2) just not know the diff, or (3) just trying to be obtuse?

Quite! I was going to ask when the training on the service pistols start for these civil volunteers, without lots of practice barn doors will be safe, but perhaps not bystanders.

A basic IQ test followed by some training should be a prerequisite to this plan but I kinda think it probably won't be.

Aaahh... They had a democratically elected Prime Minister... Police Lieutenant Colonel Thaksin on their side... They call it Tak Bai. You ignore it.

Who fired the grenades that killed children and injured more in front of Central World just some months short months ago... Where did they come from? You ignore it.

Every time you open your mouth... You manage to put your foot in it.

Edited to say: You ignore reality. By the way, what does toe jam taste like?

In answer to the last line, it probably depends what he has been standing in.

If the taste is similar to a rectal thermometer it could also indicate if he is coming down with something.
