I don't know the OP but I knew someone in exactly the same situation a few years ago in Bangkok.

She wanted me so much but knew it was both impractical and impossible. She did special favours for me that extended from her business life (where we first met) through to private, very personal moments that I was foolish enough to encourage. Eventually, she realised the futility of it all and turned quite cold, maybe slightly vindictive. Even attempts by myself to remain friends via social media were rebuffed in less than pleasant terms.

Basicly, American wouldnt know what British talking about but british they all known what American talking to because they own language. Most of british like to made a joke of American too.
