Does anyone know for definite if a hotel uses a master code to open the safe it forgets the original code? I.e you will know if someone's used the master code as your code won't work?

We have one of those small safes in the bedroom plus a proper one elsewhere.

Ours is the one that can br operated by either a credit card, key or a 4 figure code. Called a World Safe.

Yes it comes with a master override code ...they all come with the same master overide code. I have found these safes in hospitals and hotels.

And frequently found that they haven't chsnged the master code ...so I change it for the period of my stay and then change it back when I leave.

I usually tell the manager about his security.

I wouldn't be surprised if there is also a "factory code" for people who forgot their changed "master code".

I know 2 guys who just got back from Pattaya. One lost $600US the other had $1200 taken from different hotel safes in

a week. The manageress offerred back one of them 80% of the ammount lost so she was definitely in on it.

I've never heard of it before and always leave money in safes. And they have a master combo for sure

.

And don't forget... for key-pad safes with lit displays etc., when the battery goes dead, all the master codes in the world ain't gonna help you. They have to have a physical key to pull the bolt back or drop a pin so the bolt can be pulled back by a lever. Otherwise electronic keypad safes would be useless.

scary.....I take they give warnings before the battery dies, or even refuse to lock....do they?

I bought one for home use and there's nothing in the instructions about a master code. There is a hidden keyhole and a funky looking security key to unlock it when the battery dies or one forgets the code.

The only problem I have had with a hotel safe was when my 4 year-old punched in some numbers and locked it. Luckily we hadn't put anything in it yet. Nobody knew what numbers he used and it was still locked when we checked out.
