Nation TV revenue surges in third quarter
The Nation

BANGKOK: -- The Nation Broadcasting Corporation says revenue from its Nation TV digital channel in the third quarter soared to a record high.

NBC president Adisak Limprungpatanakij said the channel enjoyed quarterly revenue of Bt121.18 million, a sharp rise of 91 per cent from Bt63.41 million in the same period last year.

He is confident that the station's advertising revenue will continue to grow significantly as the number of viewers grows. This will be stimulated after the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission began distributing 4.1 million vouchers on October 10 to households in 21 provinces to buy either digital set-top boxes or TVs with digital tuners. About 50,000 of these vouchers have been used daily to buy such digital-TV equipment.

The NBTC will give away another 4 million vouchers in the second phase on November 28 to households in another 21 provinces. This means that before the end of this year the base of digital TV viewers will reach 8 million households or 28 million people.

The NBTC will give away vouchers in the third phase next March.

Adisak said the net advertising rate of Nation TV's news programme "Khao Khon Khon Nation" was Bt28,000-Bt30,000 per minute.

The company will raise this rate to Bt40,000 per minute. It will also raise the advertising rates of its other programmes on the channel by 30-50 per cent in response to the growing digital-TV viewer base.

For the consolidated NBC financial performance in the first nine months, it made profit of Bt5.86 million, a sharp drop of 86 per cent year on year from Bt42.71 million. Revenue from sales and services in the first nine months was Bt482.57 million, down 3 per cent year on year because of the impacts of negative political situations, which erupted in the fourth quarter of last year and affected the economy.

This is great. Now that they're making money maybe they can afford to hire reporters and editors for their newspaper who actually have some command of the English language instead of using the idiots that are currently there and write the garbage that they expect people to actually try to read.
