The long reach of the IRS over 4 years.... has them pissed because I hired the best retired IRS attorney with 30 years exp....they are trying to see how much I am willing to spend to give in as I will eventually prevail.....by principle I refuse and am continuing to respond to the 1,000 pages that my attorney has to respond to....I came here and have found out I will miss an IRS hearing (or fly back in 2 days) my attorney says that is there intent and are very vindictive.....................longest story shorter.....should I worry about Thai immigration being notified and my passport held??....my worst night mare....and for the future...what are the conditions that the Thai immigration might keep a passport????...have lived here before for years no problems long visas and never had to deal with hassle of 30 day tourist.........respectfully....deer in the headlights..

Don't f with the IRS.

For anything to happen here it would have to get to the point where they have charged you and an arrest warrant issued.

Could the IRS just not cancel his PP ?

No they cannot.

A few years ago a guy went to the US Embassy to apply for a new passport they confiscated it issued him s temporary one and told him to go back to the states and take care of his legal issue. I believe it was a child support thing. No reason why the IRS could not do the same or Embassy just refuse to issue you a passport due to IRS warrant.

As little as $2,500 in back child support can result in passport being revoked. At this time, there is no similar risk with failure to pay IRS taxes. According to multiple Google searches.

As an earlier poster indicated, do not mess with the IRS--the house always wins.

Sen. Harry Reid (D-Nev.) proposed that if you owe the IRS more then $50,000, you shouldn’t get a passport.

In fact, if the bill is passed you could have your passport revoked merely because you owe say $60,000 and the IRS has filed a notice of lien.

For taxes, the answer appears they can not.

IRS is an agency of the Department of Treasury. It does not have any authority to cancel passports. US Embassies are under the State Department that has the authority to issue, cancel, and withhold passports. If an American is attempting to evade criminal proceedings brought by any US federal agency by leaving the country, they can request assistance from the State Department to get the person to return to the US.

Talk to your elected representatives and make sure the above bill does not pass.

that section of the bill was removed July 9 this year.

Posts bringing US politics into the discussion. This forum is not for political debates.

Last April I went on a cruise from Los Angeles to Ensenada with my family.

On return, have to clear customs and immigration.

Several people got detained exiting the boat.

They were told it was possibly due to back child support, alimony, and warrants. Don't remember if included taxes also.

Are you expecting social security when you retire?

Don't mess with the IRS.

Maybe other painful now but I think the IRS doesn't forgive nor forget

Apology for the political misdirect.

Only word of caution specific to the OP is that even though your US passport will not be at risk today, it is entirely possible that it will be as a result of future legislation so in a general sense, anyone thinking of evading taxes in the US may be paying for that decision 2-10 years down the road.

Why try to scare the old guys? Look up what percent of Social Security the IRS can take I believe it is 15%.

Not trying to scare him but relate something I saw recently.

Social security doesn't pay much anyway - maybe only $1,500 per month.

Maybe too difficult to take that away.

You didn't see anyone's Social Security being taken away. You made that up. Sorry, I thought you were trying to scare people starting a rumor about the IRS taking Social Security.

Maximum Social Security benefit 2014: $2,642/mo.

But that can change if taken to court, civil or criminal, and a warrant is issued.

As it would be if you shot someone. I think the point is an American has the right of due process. The intent of the IRS was to get Americans before they had the opportunity to defend themselves. Kind of like McCarthyism, the accusation was enough to ruin your life. And in that the IRS has not prevailed.

I have good news:for 2400$ you can relinquishe your US citizenship(great country by the way and US people are wonderful people, so smart, thin, healthy ... , I don't think I could live somewhere else, I love USA. ) and be free from irs. before it was 450 bucks.

last month my European bank sent me a form I have to sign every year asking if I m a USA person. the form is a USA form so I don't give so much s...t about it. I just signed it and send it back.

guess what? the bank in question sent me back the form and told me I have to write down where I suppose to pay my tax.

So I wrote I pay my tax in my European country(I m not really as my residence is no where and that s legal In my country of citizenship ) and I sent the form back.

the crazy thing is all these forms are just to chase US person and kick them out. more and more I see it s worse and worse for USA people since they have implemented this fatca crap.

if you have another nationality like me, you should consider leaving the USA for good and never go back.

"I have good news:for 2400$ you can relinquishe your US citizenship"

Well, $2,400 plus you have to pay up for any untaxed assets such as 401(k) and IRA.

"it s worse and worse for USA people since they have implemented this fatca crap."

Is it? Complying with FATCA takes me about 5 minutes a year.

Well, complying with FATCA takes Hubby and me somewhat more than 5 minutes a year, but it's still OK, considering what we get in return. I hope those of you with dual nationalities who plan to "renounce" your U.S. nationality never plan for the U.S. gov't to help you out in a difficult situation overseas.

Not trying to be argumentative but there is very little about Rights to Due Process or much any other right when dealing with the IRS. They can seize assets without a court order, etc etc

They are rotten to the core and make bill collectors look like Santa's helpers.

Best thing to do with any IRS bill is pay it immediately and THEN fight it.

I believe this thread is about can the IRS take your passport without due process and the answer is no. They can lien your assets but can't take your passport as a result of the lien. Although I'm sure they would like to but they can't.
