Farang woman in Thailand

There are many farangs here with social issues or superiority complexes , some that don't want to be bothered, some that have experienced tedious drunk or not drunk farang bores or farang con-artists.

But how many people do you really connect with back home? Yes, it'd be nice if we all gave each other some kind of greeting. Something to signify we see each other and acknowledge we are both alone amongst a sea of people that largely don't understand us. But as you indicated, there are a few <deleted> here, so maybe you're better off letting em pass by undetected. It's best to just be yourself and look for the people that meet your eyes.

Then you become the miserable farang people are moaning about on here.

We're not all as scared of the locals as you seem to be.

I'm not scared of locals. But to imply that most Thais understand foreigners is a bit ridiculous. I mean, most of em have never left the region, let alone their own country. I know a few that have never even seen a beach. They largely have no idea what our life is like back in the west and probably wonder what we do in our own homes here. I'm sure a few of them assume we're all rich.

That's not Thai bashing, btw. Just think about some of the foreigners you knew back in your own country. Did you really understand them? Did you have a firm grasp of where they came from or where they're going? I knew a lot of immigrants back home. Been in a lot of different homes. But their lives are largely a mystery to me.

I've lived in big cities for years now. If I said hello to every person I met, it would take me hours to get anywhere.

Fair enough. You don't have to be friendly. And there's something to be said for where you live too. If I'm standing outside a place like Paragon I won't even think about it. But when I see another foreigner in an otherwise all Thai neighborhood, and he/she doesn't even give me a simple nod, it seems a bit odd.

Surely the OP must realize that western women are taught at a young age not to talk to strangers....especially creepy ones. Thai women are taught the same, but they're not accustommed to being confronted by farangs, so they simply smile out of embarassment. Many farangs take it as friendliness, but what these women are really saying is "please get away from me you disgusting piece of lardass." Another case of cultural misunderstanding.

many live (employed here with the UN, NGO's or teaching) or stay (tourists) in my apartment building. some very interesting and pleasant, others keep themselves to themselves.

all as normal or otherwise as i'd find back home.

It seems to surprise some to learn that there are normal people living here as expats. Says a lot about the world they inhabit.

Very true. My closest neighbour refuses to go to a certain part of Sukhumvit to do her shopping because of the way foreigners seem to think and act. Unsurprisingly mostly older ones.

I didn't smile at every random person I met in the street back home. I'm not sure why I would start doing so here.

Some people seem to think we should all act like we're in some big farang club. I wouldn't want to be a member of any club that includes some of the farangs I see round here.

we had a similar thread recently about western men in Tesco not responding to other western men saying hello. Nothing to do with being a women, thinking they are better etc, probably just not interested in responding to a stranger. Some will say hi back,. Some wont. is it really that hard to understand that regardless of male, female, thai, western, some will be nice, some wont.

Now that I've lived here over six years (thus, disproving one poster's theory that no woman stays more than 2 years). I've gotten to know many people -- at least by sight. Sure, I'm going to nod or say hi to them, especially people I run into all the time in the condo elevator or at the local grocery store. I'll smile at other foreigners who look pleasant on the street or in the songthaew, but not if they're scowling or looking like they'll take it the wrong way. I'll do the same thing with Thai people, especially if they have children with them, but I'm not going to do to an older Thai man for obvious reasons -- it could be misinterpreted. Better to keep a blank look.

As someone has already said, western women are trained from an early age to maintain a blank face and look thru someone when confronted with someone who's attention they don't want to catch. Thai women don't quite know how to do this with western men and so respond with the Thai default reaction of smiling or laughing when confronted with something that makes them nervous. Remember Thais don't always smile out of friendliness any more than cats always lick their coat because they need a bath. Both are ways to release tension when they feel nervous and confronted with someone looking at them.

(I guess you really have to know cats to understand the analogy)

Never had this problem and in fact met some cracking lasses, including, and esp, from the UK (for the chap somewhere above). Maybe the ones you bumped into had personal issues and you just got unlucky. However, women are generally way more intuitive than us chaps and my suspicion is that they see right through you. Keep trying old bean, but leave the Chang vest for Pattaya beach.

Like most normal people we do have off days too. We can't always be smiley and chatty.

I like meeting people wherever i am on holiday and chatting to them. I can even make up the most ridiculous stories because i know i will never see them again!! And i don't give out my e-mail, phone number or fussybook details.

The ones that ask me if i speak Swedish are the best...

But, that's because i can see them coming from 100 metres away. I am very astute in that way. The people that i really want to meet and have a drink or a meal with i don't make up stories. And i have kept in touch with many from all over the world.

In fact, the last time i was on Samui i was wearing a Swiss flag t shirt and a guy came over to me and we started chatting. Worked out he lived two streets away from me here!! We meet up regularly for a chat.
