Recommendations for Eye Specialisl/Surgeon in Bangkok

Greetings all,

I have recently been diagnosed with mild cataract in both eyes at Rutnin Hospital. I have also been told that I have Epiretinal Membrane in one eye. The Dr I saw at Rutnin Hopital then was not very communicative and a little rough when examining my eyes. I wasn't very impressed by his manners. In any case, I now feel that the cataract is getting worse rather quickly and I would like to have it checked again.

I have just read through some old posts on the topic but cannot find anything more recent than 2012.

I'd be grateful if people think Rutnin is still the best eye hospital in BKK and if so are there any cataract specialists/surgeons you can recommend?

Thanks very much.

Thanks Steve. How long ago did you have this surgery? If recently, please send me the contact details of the Dr who treated you. In my case. it seems like what I need is surgery for cataract but because of the other condition, I need to make sure I have both conditions looked at.

My favorite eye doctor in Bangkok is Dr. Prin Rojanapongpun. On his name card it says that he is a specialist in cataract and glaucoma surgery, although I used him for other eye problems. I visited him at Sukhumvit Hospital, where his services can be had for much cheaper than at Bumrungrad, where he also works. (One of my strategies with Thai doctors is to find ones who work at Bumrungrad (which is too expensive for me), but to visit them at one of their other, cheaper workplaces, as many Thai doctors work at multiple hospitals.) You can find his biography here: https://www.bumrungrad.com/doctors/Prin-Rojanapongpun

Use Google to find him at Sukhumvit Hospital.

I think myself and many others on this forum will agree that Rutnin is the best eye care in Bkk. That being said, there are many Dr.s there and perhaps you got one that was not to your liking. I would try to find one that is US trained and maybe the communication will be better. There are many other options at major private hospitals as well.

Heard all the good things about Dr. Prin. He's one of the so-called top 2 glaucoma specialists in Thailand. The other one is Dr. Chaiwat who works at Rutnin. Dr. Chaiwat was trained at New York Eye and Ear Infirmary (glaucoma) and Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary (cornea). He also performs cataract surgery.

One doctor at rutnin who I've used and would like to recommend is Dr. Roy Chumdermpadetsuk http://www.rutnin.com/eng/ophthalmologist_detail.php?id=6 and http://www.rutningimbel.com/doc10.html. I find him very communicative and his examination very thorough. He's a pretty nice person too. One TV member speaks very highly of him (post 45).

There are several good ophthamologists in Bangkok, but I'd like to suggest that you stick with rutnin as it's the best and most comprehensive hospital in Thailand Ophthamology wise. Another good thing is that when you have any other eye problems in the future, you can come back to rutnin and your next doctor will be able to look at your past medical record.

Agree with Dr Chaiwat, I've been seeing him about every 3-4 months for 23 years now, mainly for glaucoma but also had two cataract surgeries done by him. He has also done Trabeculectomy on both eyes and since doing so 2+ years ago, no more eyedrops, which I started in 1984. IOP is fine, last visit in October, L-9, R-10.

Have also seen Dr Roy a couple of times for evaluation of Macular Pucker, another name for Epiretinal Membrane, but no operation as yet.

Bump june 2019 google search rutin.

Someone mentioned finding the doc from rutin at a cheaper govt hosp simply by google search.  Any other suggestions?

I might pick dr rutin simply by name, must be founder.

I need the best retina specialist still practicing.  I was told by operator the best there were dr sompat mon and wed and dr sumpa m-f.

Chime in asap.
Thank you.

I had surgery in January by Dr. Roy at Rutnin to remove a periretinal membrane.  I give very high marks to him for his skill, knowledge and ability to communicate complex things in fluent English.

That said, I did not have such a great experience with the Rutnin staff, right from the folks at the front desk receiving area to the billing folks to a couple of the nursing staff.  Be prepared for lengthy time in waiting rooms.

Would I undergo another procedure with Dr. Roy at Rutnin? Yes for the doctor, in spite of the hospital.

I stayed overnight in a private room.  Total cost was around B200,000, almost all of it covered by my Aetna (BUPA) insurance policy.  Rutnin dealt with Aetna to get the operation pre-approved for payment.  I paid less than B500 out of pocket, I think.

Original estimate from the billing department was "around B250,000," and not sure why it came in at a lower price.

My cost was higher than it could have been because I'm squeamish about my eyes and insisted on general anaesthesia, so had to pay for anaesthesia drugs, anaesthesiologist, etc.  (The operation involved making slits in the white of the eyeball to drain all the fluid from it, then enter the eyeball through the slits to remove the membrane with a scalpel type of tool, and then refilling the eyeball with a saline solution.  I didn't think I wanted to experience that while 100% alert...)
