46 workers vomit, faint in chlorine gas leakage at Songkhla factory

About 46 workers vomited and fainted after they inhaled the gas. Rescue workers rushed 28 of them to the Rataphum Hospital and 18 others to the Khuanniang Hospital. They were placed under monitoring by medical staffs.

Gas leakage hurts 46 workers

SONGKHLA: -- A chlorine gas leakage at a rubber glove factory in Rattaphum district of Songkhla province late Thursday night forced an evacuation of factory workers and residents nearby.

Forty six workers were admitted to two nearby hospitals after they vomited and some fainted.

The leakage was reported happened in SGMP factory while about 240 workers were inside the factory.

About 46 workers vomited and fainted after they inhaled the gas. Rescue workers rushed 28 of them to the Rataphum hospital and 18 others to the Kuanniang hospital. They were placed under monitoring by medical staffs.

Almost all were allowed to return homes today after they recovered.

However the factory was ordered closed Friday, pending inspection of the leakage.

SONGKHLA, 28 November 2014 (NNT) - Police have gone down to inspect a rubber glove production factory in Rattaphum District of Songkhla province after there was a major leakage of chlorine gas.

46 workers were admitted to the hospital after they had chest pain and breathing problems from accidentally inhaling the gas. Fortunately, they are no longer in a critical condition. The factory was reportedly owned by SGMP Company Ltd., which employs more than 100 workers.

Rescue officials from the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department (DDPM) Region 12, along with Public Health officials and the Rattaphum Provincial Police have worked together to determine the cause of the leakage.

According to the authorities, the gas control valve in the factory was not working properly. As of now, the valve has been closed and all production activities have been suspended. A more thorough inspection on the case will be conducted today as well.

Chlorine gas is extremely dangerous to the respiratory system and may lead to death, if a large amount of it is inhaled into the body.

Doesn't need a large amount, just a sufficient amount to cause the lungs to produce large amounts of mucous that cannot be expelled through the airway and causes death by drowning very quickly. A particularly nasty way to die.
