Issues travelling to Laos via Nong Khai land crossing?

Featured Replies

Hey all,

I remember reading a thread on here a couple of weeks ago about people with ED Visas having difficulties travelling to Vientiane via the land crossing at Nong Khai (they had to cancel their Ed Visas). I have tried searching the forum to read it again, however my search was not very successful.

I have a one year extension on my Ed Visa (issued in Chiang Mai before the recent changes) and I'm hoping to travel around Laos a bit over the Xmas/New Year period (my language school is closed for a duration of the period I wish to travel).

Did I dream the thread advising people to fly in directly to Vientiane rather than cross from Nong Khai? If this isn't the case, it would be greatly appreciated if someone could please refresh my memory regarding the situation there. I hope to book my travel arrangements soon, it's not that much more expensive flying in from the last time I checked yet due to the flight times, it means I'll have to spend a night in Bangkok which I'd rather avoid.

Many thanks in advance,

T

You are only going for a short holiday to Laos and want to continue your study.

In that case you need your re-entry eprmit to keep your permission to stay alive and do not need to cancel your ED-visa as it indicates you did not stop studying.

Thanks for your reply. I already have a multi re-entry permit. I'm still interested to find out whether this was an issue at Nong Khai or not pertaining to anyone with Ed Visas

If you have a re-entry permit to keep your extension of stay (it is not a visa) valid you will not have a problem leaving.

The reports you read were people going out to get a non-ed at the embassy.

ah OK, great... thanks Ubon Joe. Glad I wasn't remembering something that wasn't posted on here before.
