Can anyone recommend the chepeast, or at least a cheap, guesthouse, hotel or hostel in Phuket Town or around, maybe 400 or 500THB per night if possible (single room, preferably with AC)?

Thavorn, right in the middle of Phuket Town, goes for around 500 baht a night. Old hotel, large rooms.

Montri Guest House (Montri something) has rooms around that price range.

Patra Mansion around 600 baht a night and even has a swimming pool.

Try the On On hotel, historical albeit slightly run down building smack in the middle of Phuket Town. By the way there is a very active local Phuket forum.

The On On Hotel has been refurbished and is now rather smart and hip !

u can get the cheapest backpackers place ( there 2-3 of them) on the road where the market/bus stop to all the beach areas. is in town, across from the Thai airways office

think around 300 baht/night and they offer dorm rooms

On ON is not cheap since they remodeled .
