Cleanup at Bang Saen beach; more tourists visiting

CHON BURI, Dec 1 -- More tourists, including foreigners, are visiting Bang Saen beach in Bangkok’s neighbouring province of Chon Buri after a beach cleanup marked by vendors returning space, and access, to tourists.

Accompanied by Narongchai Kunpluem, mayor of Saensuk Municipality, deputy chief of 14th Military Circle Col Pob-anand Luangpanuwat acting as representative of the National Council for Peace and Order on Sunday inspected cleanup work which began early last month.

They found that not only the beach has become cleaner, the seawater has also become crystal clear, luring tourists to visit the beach which was very popular in the old days.

The cleanup has so far covered 2.6 out of the nearly 6 kilometer beach targeted in the cleanup campaign. Operators of 86 shops along the beachfront have also moved beach chairs and food stalls.

Their cooperation has left more space for tourists to wander the beach.

Mr Narongchai told journalists that rental beach chair operators were first afraid of the campaign that it might hurt their income.

But after explanation, they understood the purpose and what they see now is that more tourists are visiting the beach, he added. (MCOT online news)

I'm guessing the beach users in Phuket must be way fatter and way lazier than those visiting Chonburi. No complaints of having to walk half a mile for a beer or lack of gift buying opportunities on the nice clean beach here.

I lived in Bang Saen for a couple of years, up til 3 years ago. I thought it was pristine, course I'd come from Jomtien....

Chairs were on the beach all night, what has been cleaned ?

All you get these days is news flashes, but it's only for a photo op. Nothing has changed.

They found that not only the beach has become cleaner, the seawater has also become crystal clear, luring tourists to visit the beach which was very popular in the old days.

Horse do do, the last time I went to Bang Sean (6 months ago) the beach was filthy and so was the water (plastic bags, bottles, cups, Styrofoam, dead fish, etc.), The litter comes from inconsiderate Thai's who cannot find a rubbish bin so they leave the trash to be scattered by the wind. And it would be IMPOSSIBLE to make the water crystal clear, the water is mixed with run off from the land and the area is shallow so there isn't opportunity for the dirt to settle out.

Overall I found Bang Sean to be an ugly spot.

The numbers are the same. The difference is that the authorities can now see them because there are no umbrellas to hide the visitors.

Why do beach cleanups (in a resort town) make the news? Is it that unusual?

Should be a routine maintenance procedure.

A dirty beach should be news!
