Potato starts?

Featured Replies

Do you know what the eye of the potato is??

That is the start....... If i remember correctly.

if i was you I'd forget about growing potato up here,

myself and my mate tried, good top growth, but very small

and not many pots on them, his were also very bitter in taste.

We planted in two different sites, one in sun one in shade.

We think its just too hot in Mahasarakam for them to do anything.

Most of the Thai potatoes are grown in the north where it is a cooler

climate.

Have a Nice Day.

im not sure,

but i think the op is on about sweet potatoe slips,?

sweet potatoe east to grow and you can do all the things with them that you do to potatoes, chip, mash ,roast,

try them,

get a sweet potatoe from big c, the market, put part of it in water and wait for the slips to grow,

cut these off and just put them into hilled soil and water,

I apologize for any confusion created by my parlance. Let me restate my inquiry. Where can I get bulk seed potatoes in the Maha Sarakham/Khon Kaen area?

Marko! Or any store that sells spuds in YOUR area.

If you want Russets, Villa Suk Soi 33 SOMETIMES have 5/10LB bags

of ORE-IDA's like at Safeway.

rice555 who has worked in the fields and orchards of OR and ID, but

not in spuds.

Places like ORE-IDA (Oregon-Idaho) treat the potatoes so they won't sprout. When they sprout they get bitter, don't look as good, and out they go. They are kept in cold storage (refrigeration) until sent to market.

Common Russet potatoes are subject to diseases. It takes a hard freeze in the winter to kill those diseases in the soil. Potato blight is one.

Potatoes are grown for seed potatoes in areas which have those hard freezes. Then they aren't processed or refrigerated so that the eyes will sprout. Then before planting they are cut to get one good eye with each piece, and the cut part is quickly dipped into powdered sulfuric acid to keep it from rotting before it grows into a plant. The acid fends off rot.

You need soft deep soil with lots of organic matter to grow potatoes. If not the potatoes will be small and disfigured.

You would be best to buy locally grown potatoes and try to get them to sprout in a dark but room temperature place. Local potatoes will most likely do well in your climate and probably aren't treated to avoid sprouting.

"Seed" Potatoes should be certified disease free and handled in such a way that they will sprout. There's nothing else special about them.

There has been several threads on spud's here, nobody uses the forum search feature or using google,

like " growing potatoes in Thailand", when you use google it will also bring up TV links and TV links that

have been archived I believe?

At Aug the farmers have started to order from por rian at Chiang mai. The seed from Holland is about 80 to 100 baht per kg. It will produce a lot of big size potatoes for hotel or consume at restaurant .but last year it produce medium size. If they supply you poor quality seed but charge you at high price , the farmer also can not do anything .the more you order the cheaper the price.the seed from the old potatoes is about 30 to 40 baht.

Now they are starting to prepair the seed at the north

People have success where I am, which is not far and similar temperatures to you, planting in October and harvesting in January. They also need to irrigate throughout.
