New to Thailand ... One advice ... what would that be?

One advice for New or recently arrived Members to Thailand ... what would that be?

Actually I have two.

'Trust, but Verify'. I'm an accepting chap ... I trust people before I 'un-trust' them.

So, to keep things on a moderately short leash. I accept things as they are told to me, but I randomly verify things.

This maxim works for me.

The other is ...

'Don't Mistake Kindness for Weakness' ... fairly self explanatory. I am (hopefully perceived as) a kind person ... happy to help where I see fit.

But don't come with a sad sack story ... you won't get past the front door.

Hopefully those are seen as positive things.

What about you?

My advice would be. Be careful who you take advice from.

But I guess you covered that in your OP, as trust etc

From a practical point of view to a newbie.

Have full insurance.

And, be careful. Don't do anything stupid. Have a few drinks but keep your wits. You can die crossing the road, same as back home.

I am the same as David48. I help when I can and sometimes I might need help. The problem seems that in the past it was always myself and the wife helping others out but when we needed it there was no-one who had the time of day for us. To be honest, the most problems I have had since being here in Thailand has come from the foreigner side rather than Thai people. I am now quite restrained from coming into much contact with the farang in the area that I live now. It's a sad fact but true, I have people I trust and alot I do not.

Where is the point by giving advice to newbies?

They always know better than "us"...

dont try to cross sukhumvit road by foot, use the footbridges- i seen a foriegner try to run across askoe/sukhumvit intersection yesterday i stopped wat i was doing and waited for the outcome. Dont ride a motorcycle even if you are a skilled rider, you dont know the traffic. Dont show the soles of your feet or raise your voice in public. Dont start a fight with a thai, i know a songtheaw driver that was a muay thai kickboxer for 30 years before he retired.

Dont bring a ladyboy back to your room, dont fall for a bargirl/massage/karaoke/disco girl freelance pro. And if you do don't send them money when you get back home. Dont do drugs or party with people who do drugs.

Have some respect, enjoy your stay

whistling.gif This one:

The 80% rule.

In Thailand, as many other places, always remember that 80% of everything you hear, see, or are told is

b - - - - - - t.

Just remember the 80% rule, and you will be on firm ground to survive.

One phrase coming in: "Evaluate, adapt, overcome".

If it all goes wrong: "Shut up, pack, leave"

Remember that "I lub yoo too mut" is not idolisation, but an insult. Translated, it should read: "I love you, too, mutt."

look after your health it IS the most important thing, get good health insurance and find a good doctor you can see when you need to

enjoy yourself and understand that this isn't your country and you are not here to change it into something it is not and has never been

Keep a low profile. Keep things to yourself.

You can't trust the women not to screw around.

Especially if you work offshore.

Don't eat yellow snow.

Oh David, you have an online lover. He can't keep his hands off you, lucky man.

Please keep the banter going, and make it dirty.

I know what lannarebirth is thinking.

Your two examples seem to be telling us how to deal with you...........nothing to do with Thailand?

Stay calm, don't lose your temper, learn the local customs, don't wai anyone.

Exactly, think with the head up top, or you'll be on here crying that she loved you then she left you for a Thai, who by the way she's probably married to anyway. Bar girl, masseuse, kareoke, hair salon, nail girl, pretty much any girl who talks to u without being formally introduced you should avoid

Don't let all the bitter old dears on Thai Visa talk you into becoming a bitter old dear. You probably came here to enjoy yourself. They won't stop until they've made you as miserable as they are.
