Got stopped the other day by the police in my car, no real reason really aside from I have a bangkok number plate and I live in maha sarakham... anyway he asked me for my driving license which I did not have on me at the time, he then said to me I have to pay a fine, so I asked him nicely if it was ok to pay the fine now on the spot, with this he said yes 500 bhat, I only had 400 bhat in my wallet so he accepted that slipping it into his pocket he then said 'steven gerrard, very good! and shook my hand'

It was worth the 400 bhat to be honest just for the amusement

. . that's just the easiest way to escape from being forced to hand out the car keys and walk home, as they would do in our home countries. I sometimes love that there are ways to make a BIB's day. Since it was you who forgot the driver's license at home, can't put blame onto the happy sergeant in brown.

I always love their saluting . . . . and the accompanying smile

.. you should consider handing out free FCLiverpool stickers at road blocks . . .

May your voyages always be on the happy side tongue.png

OP, as you are living in Thailand please remember.

1. Always carry your passport with you.

2. When driving, always carry your driving licence with you.

Are these too much to ask for?

It's the law, obey or keep paying fines.

I don't find this stuff amusing at all. The corruption among traffic cops is one of the leading reason the roads here are so deadly. Can even pay your way out of a DUI a good portion of the time here in BKK.

May I ask you, if you see this positively or negatively by any ways ?

Well it takes a good driver to escape all the road carnage, but when you was a boy, didn't you ever wish you was a cool cowboy ?

He would have accepted 200b should always carry some separate side money in another compartment in the car so you don't have to reach into your wallet in front of them as they'll look in your wallet and your fine gets gauged by that a lot of times. I keep my license in my wallet and never leave it in the car. Always on me that way and it is less likely to get forgotten or stolen. FYI don't need to carry your passport, a copy will suffice, leave home tucked safely away.

We don't need to carry our passports.

Ermm it is written in the law that an officer may receive a fine road side, what he does with it after that is his responsibility.

Thai minimum wage is 300B per day.

He can afford it, but most Thai can't.

Really easy: if you receive a receipt it is above board.

Still HIS responsibility, not mine to police, the police especially in another country where I'm a guest..

?? Who can afford what? blink.png

On a 300B wage Thai people can't afford to pay 400B tea money for cops

And??

And the OP by encouraging corruption is making it hard for Thai people to live in their own country.

Making it hard for the rest of farangs to be accepted here.

Corruption is endemic all over the world.

In the west it is the criminal justice system - he who has the most money to hire the best lawyer wins.

In Latin america, south america, eastern Europe the under-the-table "gift" prevails.

Me, I would much rather pay small money and go then deal with courts, etc.

The Thai people I know understand and accept this system.

Thai people have tried everything to get rid of corruption, included loosing their democracy.

Every time you encourage it, you make it difficult for someone else .

In Mexico recently 40 protesting pacifist young students were given to the mafia by the police and were executed.

Is that what you want for Thailand?

Not too mention insurance increases, but anyway the Op is having no effect what-so-ever on the life of expats there or the locals either, the BIB know the score and it works accordingly.

Not correct. Without receipt you're bribing him, a criminal offense.
