The team of dental specialists at RAM hospital are excellent.,

Not the cheapest in town, but they've got the gear and the know-how. The boss dentist was trained in the USA and did a number of root canals and crowns for me.

I saw a sign advertising dental implants for I believe it was 45,000 baht at

Dr. Joy, Dr Yai and others.

I go there for all my work and am very pleased with them. Also finally got the wife to go there instead of some cheap places she knew about who did crappy work. She is now very satisfied.

Not really sure about it but I believe Chiang Mai has an excellent dental college. 5 years ago when I was visiting in Canada. I had a loose cap. I went to a dental clinic and they said I would have to see one of their dentist who specialized in caps. Turned out she was Thai and had received her degree here. Small world.

I noticed that the price for an implant has gone from 60000 THB to 85000 THB at Empress Dental since the last time I looked at their website. That's up to about half the average price in the US. I'm more interested in results than the price however. Can anyone comment on their experiences anywhere in Chiang Mai with implants? Anyone have implants done more than a couple of years ago and are you still happy with them?

You definitely want those done right and not price shop...

I can't say with personal experience but my Dentist near Wat Prasign charges 55k and he is a stickler for quality but one man shop and light on frills.

There might be choices of implant quality also.

He is on road north and east of the temple. One road north of the walking street and across from the burger place.

Have a google at dental4u chiang mai. I've had a few implants done there a few years ago including sinus lift, bone graft, etc.

Not trivial stuff. Brilliant work.

The web site shows qualifications, prices, all you want to know.

Some of the lower quotes you see elsewhere might not include a crown.

Most of those dentists work at Elite too.

All implants start with a titanium post embedded in the jaw bone. I doubt there are grades of titanium. So a lower price for the procedure is probably just as good as the higher priced places.

Unless the dentist has alcohol on his breath. I go to Elite for years now. Never had a complaint.

A substantial but not large amount of the titanium that comes out of Russia has been found to be radioactive.

That might lower the source price a bit.

There could be grades because of the diversity of sources.

From researching and riding bicycles made of Titanium there are definitely source and quality differences depending on the seller.

Might we worth researching the MFG of the implant base.

So the price of the implant does not include the crown? Wow they are pricey if one tacks on another 18k baht for a gold crown.

That is some pricey Titanium

Why on Earth would you want a gold crown? I have porcelain crowns that are nearly 30 years old. I'm not a pimp so I pass on bling crowns.

^^ a crown on Molar teeth? Porcelain on Molars or pre Molars don't tend to last very long.

Slightly less expensive than Gold is Zirconium which is strong enough to last on Pre/Molars but harder than gold and can damage other teeth. Zirconium is often chosen because it looks natural but will beat up the opposing teeth.

Gold is best on Pre/Molars because it slightly deforms and does not damage the opposing contact teeth. Downside of Gold is higher price and not natural look.

Carbon fiber is another Pre/Molar choice with various tradeoffs.

I had a carbon fiber pre molar with Porcelain surface crown last about 7 years and fell apart. Replaced it with gold and its been fine for 12 years now.

On less load bearing teeth Porcelain is fine, less expensive and importantly looks natural.

I am having an implant done done by a periodontist in florida at this time. $5,000 for extraction cadaver bone graft implant crown completed by regular prosthodontist. And I will get more than mai pen rai if they screw up.

Useless information alert! Perhaps...

I got a perfectly good implant, crown n' all, for 30K in Phrae. One year ago.

I betcha if one went to a suburban-style dentist somewhere on the periphery of CM, one could get a similar deal. Don't need a dentist with a website, right?

Maybe to cover the cost of the construction of that huge, new building that was erected?

I think you will find that 45,000 is just for the work and that the full cost with the tooth at Elite is more like 80,000 using a Korean post and up towards 100,00 for an American post. It looks like an expensive punch!

Be thoughtful in buying a pin and go implant. The kind that allows a tooth from day one. They last about 5 years give or take.

I would recommend DENTAL WORLD CLINIC locating in Chiangmai city (just 15mins from airport and plenty of car parking space). Implants starting from 60,000 Baht with doctor specialist. Their implants jobs are excellent and staffs are very friendly/helpful. Contact Dr.Surasak, who is a clinic owner. Visit their website at www.dentalworldchiangmai.com

I had 2 implants with Dr.Surasak (owner) at Dental World clinic without any problem. 3 weeks staying in Chiangmai is good enough for the first stage of implant. His professional treatment really made me peaceful that I could trust him. Actually, I had other experiences with other doctors also. Dr.Pavittra did very good for my crowns. Dr.Benchaporn did great job for deep cleaning (no pain at all!)

Try to find more at their website.

Good luck.

I'm an old codger in my 70s and usually live in Chiangrai but I'm in UK now where my 3-tooth bridge has fallen out and left me with a big gap and diminished chewing power, so I need to do something about it fairly quickly, and I suspect I'm going to need some serious implant work to anchor a new bridge on. Probably a surgical extraction and maybe bone graft too; it's hard to tell.

I haven't found any dentists in Chiangrai who can speak good English and who have regular reliable experience of implanting, so I'm trying to weigh up the relative merits of having this somewhat scary work done in Chiangmai versus Bangkok. I believe it's a lot safer to go to clinic where they've got specialists doing implant work all the time..

Sounds like this kind of treatment is going to require some return visits to my chosen clinic so obviously it would be easier and cheaper for me to go to and fro to Chiangmai than all the way to Bangkok. On the other hand Bangkok probably hosts clinics with considerably more experience and expertise on implant work, so not easy to choose even before price comes into it.

I've also posted my dilemma about choosing a clinic on the Bangkok forum at http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/697713-best-dental-clinics-in-bangkok-endodontists-and-crowns/page-2#entry9939506

I'll be flying back from UK to Bangkok next week so by staying a few extra days in Bangkok before coming north I could get my treatment started there straight away, but then I'd be lumbered with an unknown number of return visits there.

Just wondering if there's anyone else from the north who's weighed up the merits of the better available expertise in Bangkok against the hassle of having to keep going back there several times?

Yes, I can recommend him. His English is quite ok and his work is spotless.

Elite good work and good price. Why pay more than necessary?

I had my implant done by Dr. Piraya at Dentalland on Nimmanhaimen Soi 17. He's some sort of professor at the Chiang Mai University Dental School. No complaints. He used a Nobel implant which is a very high quality piece of work. Another friend of mine recommends Dentalworld on Mahidol. He got 2 implants His dentist is also a professor at Chiang Mai University and is responsible for training other dentists to do implants.

Thanks Circusman and thanks ilostmypassword for those two suggestions. i'm going to stop over in BKK on my way back from UK this week and go in for an examination and treatment plan from Dr.Sunil clinic there and then based on that decide whether to take their treatment there and then, or come up to CM and hawk my open mouth around dentists there. It will partly depend on how many return visits they expect might be necessary. One or two extra trips down to BKK would be OK, but if it's likely to be more than that, then having the whole thing done in CM would be more convenient. I expect the general expertise and experience available in BKK will be better, but I'll have to weigh that up against the extra inconvenience of return visits there. If I decide in favour of CM, I'll certainly bear your suggestions in mind.

Posted

I doubt bkk will offer more professional services or expertise. Why would it be better there?

Some other people are saying that perhaps because it's bigger, because it has more international patients so there's more of an obligation to gain accreditation from international bodies, and because with economies of scale they can go in for more specialists instead of one or two dentists just doing the occasional implant. . Hard for me to judge as a mere individual with no personal experience of implants, but these sound like fairly credible reasons to me. I'll have to weight up the merits of these reasons against the inconvenience of having to make multiple visits back to BKK once I've got a clearer picture from my first quote and treatment plan in BKK this Friday.

I had an implant done at Empress. Dr. Jarunee started the procedure when she was working at Grace Dental. When it came time to put the tooth in the implant base after 6 months she had gotten her own practice so I followed her there to finish it. Mine cost a bit more then as I wanted gold behind the enamel. No complaints about the work and she matched the color of the implant perfectly with my aged tea stained teeth.

Thanks, that's quite interesting. May I quiz you about how you got on? Did you need a bone graft or a sinus lift? How about immediately after the implant was done, were you sore and tender for quite a while? How did you avoid eating around the area of the implant until it all stabilised? How many return visits did you have to make before the final crown was fixed on the implant, and how long was it before you reached that stage?

Have to admit to being a bit nervous about having implants myself. Most reports I've read seem to conclude it was all worth it in the end, but don't say much about their interim healing period or how long it took to get there.
