Villagers from Soi Kingkaew arrive at Phuket Town police station.

PHUKET: -- Another case of rich-versus-poor land problems came to a head on Thursday (December 4) when more than 50 villagers from the Soi Kingkaew community gathered at Phuket Town police station after a “businessman” reported to police that they encroached on and damaged private land.

Songklot Imjit, a representative of the villagers, explained, “Actually, we planned to plant some trees on the border separating the village from the mangrove to celebrate HM the King’s Birthday.

“There are 432 families comprising about 1,200 people in the community. We have lived there for a long time and we are waiting for our community land paper to be issued.

“We live next to mangrove forest but we have a concrete agreement not to encroach on the forest and we all respect that.”

He said that the villagers had gathered at the police station because police had asked them to meet with the businessman to discuss the dispute.

But when they arrived, they found that the businessman had not come to the meeting and the police were handling the situation.

After leaving the police station, the group went straight to the Damrongtham Center to place a counter-complaint.

“We have received a complaint from them,” said Prapan Khanprasang, Damrongtham Center Chief.

“We will set a date when both sides can have a talk at this office.”

On Monday (December 8) villagers from the Satonpho community also went to the Damrontham Centre to ask for help in a dispute with the owners of the land on which they live.

so who is this rich "businessman" that seems to think he own the whole village ?

Pretty sure he's the guy with legal title to the land.

And you know this because you know the guy and have seen the title, right?

No, I know this because this has been in the news for some time and the facts are already out there, these people are squatting and the land has title. Question is, how long have they really been squatting and do they now have squatters rights. Might want to pay attention before piping in on a subject you know nothing about.

I hope the police charged the guy in the sam-lor for not wearing a helmet.

.......and checked the Registration Book to see that it has been re-registered as a combination (after formal inspection) and the higher rate of tax paid, and that the biker has a license to drive a combination, and that the rear light is not burned out, and....and....and

In your dreams....p

The question to ask is when and how the "business person" obtained title to the land. Most common in cases like this within the Kingdom is that the "influential" person obtains a title deed to what had been "commons", land traditionally used by a neighboring village that was never titled, or owned, until recently.
