Over lunch today, I casually asked my wife what tomorrow's holiday was all about.

I almost spit up my lunch when she replied that tomorrow's holiday was about celebrating democracy in Thailand!

I asked how Thailand could celebrate democracy when they are currently ruled by a non elected military junta?

"Don't talk about politics" she replied.

Is she correct?

Is the holiday really a celebration of democracy in Thailand?

If so, shouldn't the holiday be put on hold until there is an elected government in place?

I do think Thailands situation is better than it was before and believe it holds promise for Thailand's future.

But a democracy it is not!

She is right - it is about celebrating democracy. When Thailand changed from an absolute monarchy to a constitutional monarchy. This was in 1932. There is no Constitution right now but some chosen people are working on the new one which is about the 19th one there has been.

Seems to be sort of like celebrating your anniversary after you and the wife have divorced.

Not really as Thailand still has a constitutional monarchy, just that the constitution is being updated.

More like celebrating your anniversary when you have a bit on the side.

If Real Madrid was the model the best ministers were foreigners. Football and politics? FIFA is the best example what happens when the democratic model is abused. The most insignificant member state with 3 clubs and no stake in professional football has 1 vote. The ruling world champion, Germany, with 25000+ clubs has 1 vote. No wonder, a Swiss Thaksinish emperor could buy enough votes from Havenots, thus ruling the Haves. The football elite is not amused.

Yes, she's 100% correct. Don't talk about politics.

It is truly unbelievable that some people still pull the classic "don't talk about politics"....... Lol

If you don't want to talk about politics, then don't. But you should never tell someone else not to.

Why do some have such a hard time understanding that certain people actually have a deep interest in it. You know..... Some of us even have University degrees in it.

Go back to drinking your beer and watching football if that is what makes you happy. Some people have a deeper need for a more intellectual and stimulating conversation every now and then.

Thanks.

Glad you did not say more.

I am aware of the Thaivisa Poster of the year thread.

I noticed that you have nominated yourself!

Isn't that showing the sleazy side of the western concept of democracy?
