A Thai value film stirs criticism

10-12-2557-15-04-20-wpcf_728x406.jpg

BANGKOK: -- A Thai short film aimed at promoting and restoring Thailands traditional values is igniting widespread criticism in the social media when it depicts the portrait of Adolph Hitler and the Swastika Nazi symbolism.

The film 30, produced by Thai Film Director Association in cooperation with the Office of the Prime Minister and the Office of the Basic Education Commission, shows a youthful protagonist triumphing at a wide ranging of scholastic and extracurricular activities.

The film was commissioned by the military junta as part of Thai Niyom (Thai Pride), a compilation of short films that display the Twelve Values of Thai culture.

The film was shown for free in Thai theaters last weekend.

The Hitler cameo was first noticed by the Thai news site Khaosod English, and Film 30 was then pulled from YouTube shortly afterwards.

This short film tells about two schoolboys who are close friends doing activities together at school. Activities include studying in classroom, playing sports, and scientific experiments.

When it came to arts, the film showed the schoolboy, whose talents include painting, painted the portrait of Adolph Hitler and the swastika symbolism of Nazi.

A government spokesman told Khaosod that while he had not seen the film, if he were to make an uneducated guess, it might have been intended to say that democracy has good and bad sides.

Critics said it was inappropriate to show youths clapping their hands to admire his painting talent.

A government spokesman speaking on behalf (told to) of the P.M says he has never seen the film the P.M commissioned and authorised. Did this total numbskull not think, hey my boss has ordered me to speak about one of his films so it might be a good idea to view it. Idiot of the highest order. What government would use idiots to speak for them. Sounds like the ruble who claim to be politicians and a government are back peddling and denying everything. Tools. Edited by chooka

They should stop defending, get educated a bit about the implication of their film INTERNATIONALLY, and then just do some DAMAGE CONTROL and apologize. Instead they are doubling down on the STUPIDITY.

Please Director understand you have Free of Speech will you defend my right to make any movie

I doubt it

"They just don't get it...do they?" + low education.... I assume this is referring to Americans and Bush? Well it could. Thanks Thailietoo for pointing out that Hitler is not shown in a good light. You guys posting might be missing the point...could the point be that Hitler's party WAS democratically elected and described itself as socialist? (I'm assuming the previous posts WERE from educated people) ...so, democracy is no guarantee. Maybe that's the point. Then there's the Thai thing about logos...a restaurant opened outside of Big C in Pattaya and was adorned with...wait for it...portraits of Usama Bin Laden! I asked about this (cos it seemed to make as much sense as using Adolf!) and they said it's 'just a logo'. I said it might not be good for business, Farung might not like...

He never gained a majority , I think 33% was his highest, He became a co-coalition chancellor and then after the burning of the reichstag introduced the Enabling act to give all power to him. Bearing in mind he already had an armed Militia the other parties went along with him

"Gen. Prayuth's Twelve Values, which he bestowed to the public in July, have already been rendered into a poem that students at public schools are required to memorize." wai2.gifwai.gif

#1: One, love the Nation,..."

"I don't want to convey anything," said Kulp, ... I didn’t want my film to affect anyone." blink.png

What's the point of making the film then?

facepalm.gif

The complete quote which you cut and changed the meaning was, "I didn’t want to have anything to do with politics. I didn’t want my film to affect anyone." He was taking about affecting anyone's politics.

Right.

That's why he included Hitler...

cheesy.gif

No you cut and pasted, "I don't want to convey anything," said Kulp, ... I didn’t want my film to affect anyone."

The actual quote was, ""I didn’t want to have anything to do with politics. I didn’t want my film to affect anyone." He was taking about affecting anyone's politics.

You are trying to change the meaning of what he said. . Not right and hot honest.

Some posters have referred to a lack of education on these matters, but Thai private schools in the Chiang Mai area have proudly used Nazi / Hitler themes in their annual concerts, complete with pupils dressed in SS uniforms, waving Nazi flags, and goose-stepping around under huge Nazi banners, displaying the Nazi salute .....the point being that it seems the schools promote all this rather than educate the pupils on the facts.

That's the point of the video as it paints the boy as being "spoiled, wealthy schoolboy who always gets his way. "He's always been 'number one,' and he's selfish." and he is the type of school boy who would paint a picture of Hitler.

Some 350+ posts on this subject and probably 100+ are yours saying exactly the same thing. You are not convincing anyone or converting them.

My wife watched the video and she says it is a government video to get people United and support the dear leader the same as people supported Hitler. Yes she knows who Hitler was and yes she supported the coup but now she is scared of the P.M

So they want to get people united and support the leader the same as Hitler, by pointing out that Hitler was a bad man... please, can you ask your wife through which paths of abnormal logic she reached that conclusion?

calling my wife abnormal does not make you point. Personal attacks members families on Thai Visa is not very normal. You can attack me that is fine but please in the name of normality leave personal attacks on my family out of it.

Unfortunately history is a subject that in most countries is neglected. Asking school children in the US and UK during government surveys some children even believed that Hitler was still alive; some arguing he was a great leader and some hadn’t a clue at all.

My husband and I went once to Turkey and we had been amazed to find a picture of Hitler beside a picture of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk in a local tea shop with the landlord explaining to us that both men had been “good friends”.

Still it doesn’t excuse what my fellow country man did and instead of directing films he should look for a different profession.

Yes,How long ago was that? Many know that Hitler did not die in Berlin, I for one think he lived out the rest of his life in argee- bargee land,as did many of the filthy

swine. The money and gold teeth fillings are still held in Swiss banks!!

A little repetition is forgivable, but you're right, in this case we've gotten a virtual FLOOD.

Let's not forget the prince in the UK that paraded around in a NAZI uniform when attending a fancy dress party and the trouble it caused in the papers. I have seen students in Scotland wearing similar uniforms when having parties and it didn't cause any articles in national or local papers. The uniforms are not the problem, the problem starts when the ideology of the system is transferred into a population explaining that they are different from the rest of the world and that has happened under all previous governments too including the Democrat government here in Thailand. I have lived for over 20 years abroad before coming back to Thailand and I don’t regard myself as different from any European or American.

Maybe if we understand that we are not different and that the same rules and laws others live by should apply to us too we might move forward into a democratic society.

I said abnormal logic, I didn't call your wife abnormal.

Now, if you can stop pretending to said something I didn't say, explain the logic that led to the conclusion that the film calling Hitler a bad person is used to rally the people behind Prayuth.

It was a demonstration. How many people can have an opinion based on prejudice as opposed to fact. A reporter wrote a controversial story with the facts in the middle instead of at the top to bait clicks.

1. Fact. The video paints Hitler in a bad light. 2. Fact. #1 was ignored time and time again even though the video was in the thread and the words of the director were quoted time after time. Mr Kulp explained, referring to the film's spoiled, wealthy schoolboy who always gets his way. "He's always been 'number one,' and he's selfish. "Hitler is also a 'number one,' in a bad way."

The posters made up some incident that did not occur and admonished Thailand and the Thai education for this terrible made up assault.

The video did not glorify or say anything positive about Hitler in fact the reverse. But post after post tried to say it did and they were all wrong.

What, Hitler invaded Poland by using poor comprehension skills? Launched Operation Barbarossa using the feigned indignation to avoid answering a question maneuver?

Honestly, I'm not entirely clear on what you tried to say with that post, perhaps clarify it a bit more but I will say two things:

-- This was a government propaganda video. Not saying it is wrong to make government propaganda videos per se. That would depend on a case by case on the real agenda behind the propaganda. I reckon such media is common in many countries.

-- Thailand does not enjoy freedom of expression in the artistic/commercial film industry. There is a massive amount of censorship. That's a shame on many levels. I think with less censorship Thailand has the potential to be a much bigger player on the international film scene ... like South Korea.

If you work in education you would know that the study was done 2 years ago and in that respect is very recent. People that are older seem to have a better memory and would know who Hitler was. As far as the facts go Hitler died in his bunker in Berlin and it was the Soviet Union that kept the myth alive that he might be still around. That was cleared up after the wall in Berlin came down and the archives in Moscow had been opened for historians after the demise of communism.

I think youve made that up about people saying the video "Glorifies Him" Youneed to get it into your head that Hitlers very inclusion in the video offends people and that is the issue. He is a Mass murderer of Historic proportion , I doubt he could be seen in a good light

To jump to the next step: regardless of the logic behind the choice, i don't think anyone is going to be wooed by including the image in a propaganda film. Those who do not support or like the current

Leadership in Thailand should be very happy with the choice.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Regarding surveys in the English speaking world, i found the same thing with students in Australia - they were largely unaware of modern history. The guys from 'Chasers' (an Australian TV show) asked people on the street in the US to point out on a map where Iraq was. Many people identified Australia and many advocated bombing Victoria...AleG: it makes me think this lack of historical and geographical education is a global phenomenon.

What do you expect from uneducated people.

I had some paper in Thai which I couldn't read. I went to the market and start asking people if they could read what does it write on the paper. Everybody turned of or just smiled without looking at the paper maybe if they could understand something UNTIL NUMBER 10 WHO COULD READ AND WRITE THAI LANGUAGE.

So that means only 10 % can read and write in this country. Some countries in Africa only 1 or 2 % can read and write but these countries do not have big population, maybe some million or so ,,,,,, than I check a big country like India with a population of 1000 million people, I get surprised when I saw that ONLY 4 % CAN READ AND WRITE.......

I am not clever at all, and absolutely not rich. All my life I survived with some limited money, worked nights and studied day time. Sometimes I had food to eat sometimes I had only bread to eat. BUT I ALWAYS LEARNED SOMETHING ALL THE TIME. NOW I CAN SPEAK AT LEAST SPEAK 7 LANGUAGES AND UNDERSTAND SOME OTHERS.

Because I couldn't just work eat and sleep.

I don't know what these people are thinking, if they ever think.

I have learned not only the history of Europe but the hole world back to 5000 years in the school. Why ? Because I have a brain and I want to use it.

Here they even don't believe in God. So God can not help them either.

Why I stay here ? I tell you.

The climate is warm , you don't have expenses with shoes, socks , warm clothes, gloves etc. and the food is cheap, and I am poor . I don't have any other choice but I sit here and learn every day many things.

Have a nice day

Cheers

Can someone explain to these people, that it means 7 millions Jews massacred in the worst atrocious manner ?

To elaborate: 7 million Jews, gypsies, homosexuals, free-thinkers, dissidents, handicapped & other "undesirables". Maybe if we focus on the gays & other sexual deviants, Thai people will wake up & pay attention.

WELL! With your inference about homosexuals being "sexual deviants" you have just rendered yourself and your opinions irrelevant to any thinking and intelligent people.

Gay people are still regarded as sexual deviants in much or the world, perhaps even most of the world. Especially the fundamentalist world of Islam and also places that fundamentalist Christianity dominates. The fascist attitude of Hitler towards gays lives on. Perhaps it is helpful to forward gay civil rights to point out the kind of odious dictators who have been the most anti-gay in history, such as Hitler and today we have Putin (no not saying Putin is equivalent to Hitler but he's no angel either).

Maybe you should read Richard Dawkins and The God Delusion and that not believing in a God is something that can be said about Europeans too. Your statistical approach to literacy in my country isn't really a scientific approach which would require a much greater seed to come to the conclusion that only 10 % of Thais can read or write.

people sacrificed so much so we can all travel anywhere we want say what we want.

"say what we want" huh?

So what do you people want?

All images of Hitler to be banned forever , so that one day no one has a clue who this guy was and are left wondering why "people sacrificed so much" or if that is all just a story.

Its already been pointed out that Hitler is not glorified in any way , in fact his image is used as a counterpoint to anything good.

But thats not enough for many of you ... I think that maybe you want the opportunity to harp on about what "YOU" and your lot did in the war and how "You" got rid of the Nazis when actually , unless you are over 80 , you had nothing to do with it.

Anyone I knew who actually did , treated any image of Hitler with great mocking and jocularity , they certainly didnt immediately demand the image covered or removed - hell , some of them even combed their hair and sketched a mustache onto themselves for a bit of further fun.

But keep up the pretentious 'outrage' by all means ... you fought for it ( cough ) - its most entertaining 555.

Its not pretentious 'outrage' its called respect, if you're confused look it up. Go argue your case in the streets of London and see how far you get. Thai people demand respect for their country and culture but give zero respect to others.

Mel Brookes had a ball with 'It's pring Time for Hitler and Germany" So did Charle Chaplin. Mock the s o b by all means. He was one sick man as well as his many followers. But to ban the swastika is to deny history .I don't think the film meant any harm and actually made a point. There were many other dictators as bad as him but never seem to rate the same attention.
