webfact Posted December 12, 2014 Posted December 12, 2014 Child, 7, badly hurt as bike and pick-up crash into huge Phuket holeEakkapop ThongtubMs Phakkamon's truck lies in the huge hole.PHUKET: -- Two people were injured – one is still unconscious – after their vehicles last night (December 11) crashed into a large hole left by the collapse of a minor road in Srisoonthorn.Local residents complained a month ago about the flood erosion on the Baan Lipon-Baan Bangjo Rd in Moo4 that had caused the road to collapse, leaving a hole eight metres across and two metres deep.Orbortor officials, however, told residents to use an alternative route via Baan Banjo Prison because the council did not have the funds to make repairs.Last night one of the locals, Supaporn Jareonrak, called police to report that a motorcycle and a pick-up truck had driven into the hole.Srisoonthorn rescuers, Kusoldharm rescuers and police arrived to find the Isuzu truck lying in the hole, on top of the wreckage of the motorbike.Inside were the driver of the truck, Phakkamon Duangchaytemcharat, 38, suffering from a broken arm, and her seven-year-old daughter, Molly Anne Bailey, who was unconscious. Both were rushed to Thalang hospital.Residents told police the motorcycle belonged to Sod Boonrueang, 34, who had earlier driven into the hole. Locals had taken him to hospital 10 minute before the truck crashed on top of his bike. This morning police visited Sod at Thalang hospital to take a statement and then went to see Mrs Phakkamon and her daughter in Vachira Phuket Hospital for treatment. Molly is still unconscious and in intensive care.Residents issued a plea to Worawut Songyod, the Mayor of Srisoonthorn, to do something about the hole. They said last night’s accidents were not the first; “many vehicles” that used the road had fallen into the hole, they said, and been injured.Police noted that the road was dark at the time of the crash, with few street lights and no warning lights. The only warning was a piece of green plastic net stretched across the road and a small handwritten notice on a piece of cloth stating, “Road cut off.”Mayor Worawut told The Phuket News that his staff had installed a series of metal crowd control barriers across the road and put up warning signs at the side of the road before the hole, but that someone had removed the barriers – he did not know who or why.He added that he had spoken to Ms Phakkamon in hospital. He said she told him she used the road regularly and, seeing the barriers no longer there, had assumed that the road had been fixed. He added that he was working on ways to prevent further accidents.Source: http://www.thephuketnews.com/child-7-badly-hurt-as-bike-and-pick-up-crash-into-huge-phuket-hole-50090.php-- Phuket News 2014-12-12 1

Popular Post Pomthai Posted December 12, 2014 Popular Post Posted December 12, 2014 So sad. Poor innocent child injured. <deleted> is wrong with this countries priorities? It is inexcusable that this hole was not fixed weeks ago when it happened. As for the signs (home made by the sounds of things because of apathy and pathetic management by authorities), why are they removed? There should have been a permanent lit barricade provided until the road was fixed. Millions of baht wasted on stupid stupid shit on a daily basis and the basics can't be dealt with. Why why why? This kind of crap make me so angry. Hope mum and daughter make a speedy recovery. 7
Popular Post NamKAheng Posted December 12, 2014 Popular Post Posted December 12, 2014 This mayor should be sued for to his last dime (satang) for his incompetence. 11
Popular Post Pomthai Posted December 12, 2014 Popular Post Posted December 12, 2014 (edited) If I wrote what I really think of this situation, I'd never be able to post here again. It is just so incredibly wrong that situations like this can be allowed to happen. No responsibility by authorities or consideration for anything except personal gain, greed and face seems to be the modus operandi more often than not. Being a father of young children, this whole incident has upset me a lot. Edited December 12, 2014 by Pomthai 15

inzman Posted December 12, 2014 Posted December 12, 2014 Wild Wild West , no concern for the safety of the public. Money number one. 1
manarak Posted December 12, 2014 Posted December 12, 2014 (edited) I hope whoever responsible for putting up warning signs and closing the road will be sued and sentenced personally. They got strange habits for warning drivers about hazards - thin tree branches are inadequate but still rather harmless, but the other day, a large pothole on thappraya road between Pattaya and Jomtien was signaled by half of a metal crowd control barrier, the red and white paint on it was so faded so that it was almost invisible !! Driving at 45 Kph I noticed it when it was approx. 30 meters away (rather too late to feel comfortable) and another motorcycle took emergency evasive action to not collide with it. NeverSure Posted December 12, 2014 Posted December 12, 2014 If it's true that the little girl had brain surgery, she'll probably never be the same even if she survives. I once came upon an accident where a little boy had been hit by a car and he had a head injury with part of his brain showing. He had passed away already. I will never, ever forget that incident or the poor mother who was there and totally demolished emotionally. This incident borders on criminal in my mind. I can only hope the best for the girl and for her family.
Popular Post Somtamnication Posted December 12, 2014 Popular Post Posted December 12, 2014 (edited) I know this little girl and it saddens me to no end. I came home to hug my family. There is an fb page telling the story of what happened. If there is one thing I can never get used to, is local politicians coming to the hospital to give flowers and forcing the farang father to pose for the picture. The insensitivity to non Thai cultures is mind-boggling. Edited December 13, 2014 by Sheryl removed response to deleted 4

bangkokheat Posted December 13, 2014 Posted December 13, 2014 my mate and his girl drove into a bloody big hole, a smaller version of the grand canyon, on soi watboon jomtiem, lucky they both had their belts on, apparently not long after a bike went down as well, you would think there would be safety barriers erected in these situations, so brain dead the people responsible, cant think even to save their own life
robertthebruce Posted December 13, 2014 Posted December 13, 2014 Life is Cheap in Thailand..... will they learn... NO Thats for sure.. Money and Jet Skis and Rip offs are more important than people..... MONEY.. MONEY ... MONEY... Hope the little girl makes a good recovery..

darren84310 Posted December 13, 2014 Posted December 13, 2014 They didn't even have the money to block off the road in both directions??????????? Those in authority that should have done something, should resign out of pure shame.... and yet they're probably too stupid to even realise what they should have done but failed to do. 1

Tonawatchee Posted December 13, 2014 Posted December 13, 2014 The streched plastic netting and cloth warning note should have been augmented with a set of three tree branches laying on the ground ahead of the hole; this accident could have been prevented.
Benmart Posted December 13, 2014 Posted December 13, 2014 (edited) Officials often seem oblivious when it comes to public safety. There are numerous sink holes along the pedestrian walkways here in Pattatya, without barriers, warning signs or other methods of keeping people from falling in. Two of the worst are at the south end of the boardwalk on Pattaya Beach Road near the new Khun Care Police tent. This latest incident speaks volumes about the ignorance of those tasked with safeguarding the public welfare. I wonder if it ever occurred in their minds to have concrete barriers installed, which are difficult to move, along with delineators, warning signs and someone to maintain them. I wish the victims a speedy recovery and the errant officials, a swift trial and costly civil judgement against them. Edited December 13, 2014 by Benmart 1

But that is just politicians doing what they think they have to do, and what their electorate seems to demand. I remember after the tsunami there was a Dutch secretary, I think domestic affairs, on holiday in Samui. He was chasited for not coming over to the Andaman side to support the victims. I think he did the right thing by staying away, Just to say I don't think this is a cultural divide, just stupid politicians. Edited December 13, 2014 by Sheryl response to inaccurate info 2
anon467367354 Posted December 13, 2014 Posted December 13, 2014 the concept of consequence still doesn't exist in this country. Yes the road should have been clearly marked and of course both in the car should have been wearing a seat belt. I've never seen a child in a seat belt, usually they are sitting on the driver's lap or hanging over one of the seats. Yes it's irresponsible not to fix the road and just as much irresponsible if not more to not have your child secured in the vehicle. The car was not totaled, it was the impact from within that killed her. All too sad in so many ways. 2

Did the Police come to these many accidents? And do nothing? It's as beggaring as the article about the Bangkok school that makes the kids rub their knees on the pavement, or the Hill people in the north needing warmth every year (since they migrated there) and whining for others to help them stay warm. Everyone complains, but no one does anything about it. The problem is clear. The Thais ignore the problem. The Thais complain when the problem affects them, singularly. No one does anything. The problem does not go away. Thais, singularly, get the affect. The entire process is repeated ad nausea. "In Thailand, there is no emergency or crisis until it happens."

Here's hoping she does recover. Poor wee lass. If they weren't wearing seatbelts, then the mother is just as much to blame as the local council (for not clearly marking the hazard). There is no excuse for not making a child that age wear a seatbelt. Thoughts are with her... 1
2fishin2 Posted December 13, 2014 Posted December 13, 2014 What does 'apparently' mean?If you would have read my post you would also have read 'As a father of a 7-year old this comes close to home, and makes me so incredibly sad. RIP Molly, and condolences to the parents.' Let's just hope that the earlier and later withdrawn notifications about her death don't come true. The first thing you wrote was about not wearing seatbelts. This to everyone here implies the first thing you were thinking is that somehow they played a part in their own misfortune. Kinda like when a woman gets raped she might be at fault. People who make these kind of statements make me sick. If the shoe fits....This incident just pisses me off to no end. But for the Thais <deleted> archaic government and attitudes, this incident would have never occured. This just solidifies to me how <deleted> up the attitude of people here really is.Such a sad time that such a young child and family is robbed of life and happiness all because of STUPIDITY of people here. The governement officials, police, should be made held reaponsible for this accident. If this happened in a civilized society, you bet your ass they would pay!So sad
