Take a copy of your lease which might be useful but if you don't have one (like me) take a recent electric bill and water bill - they have your address on them. If you don't have any utility bills then you should get one from your landlord.

It doesn't matter if they're not in your name, it's the address they're looking for. I did this earlier this week and I got two certificates of residence, one for my driving license and the other for the bank.

I just want to mention that the residency letter is a free service.

The more of us that refuse to pay the 300 baht upwards that is usually asked for (at least in Jomtien immigration) the more likely the practise will be stopped.

Ask for a receipt or take your Thai partner with you who can politely refuse to pay the tea money asked for. Either ploy has worked for me.

Used to be Free but has not been Free for several years at least not in Jomtien...Try to to pay Tea Money and see how long you wait?

Pay "Tea Money" if you want to but, the more of us who refuse to pay for a free service the more likely they will stop asking,

I've never experienced a delay in obtaining a residency letter. In fact, when I refused to pay in February this year, the officer was so taken aback he quickly completed my application.

I had to pay 400 baht, 200 for car 200 for motorbike, got no receipt and was told that it will be sent to my home address in 3 weeks. What a service at CW! As I need to extend my liscense next week, I might have to go to my embassy after all.

Local police stations also do a letter for free or small rea.

Usually only if there is no immigration office within a reasonable distance away.

Recent news here on TV suggests this fairytale fee is being investigated in Phuket

Hi mate, what else do I need other than the electric bills to get the residence letter? If I am in Bangkok, it would only be Chaeng wattana immigration right?

How long will the residence letter be valid? I need it to convert my international license to a Thai ones. Do I need this letter for opening a bank acc?

Theres no fixed rule country wide.. Some immigrations do it easily, and free, others dont or charge.. This is for sure one where you can never say "this is how it is" and checking your local office is the only way to be sure.

Recently Chiang Mai refused to give them, to anyone not on a non imm visa or extension.. Then they were free.. Now they charge 500b, but give them to anyone on a tourist visa with the flimsiest of paperwork.

I needed one recently and when asked for the 500b I said the service is supposed to be free.. Oh yes you can have it free, the fee is for 'next day processing' if you want it free it takes 'maybe' 4 weeks, who knows.. Well played, I will give them that..
