Govt. unveils master plan for palm oil industry

BANGKOK, 14 December 2014 (NNT) -- The Office of Agricultural Economics has unveiled a master plan to develop Thailand's palm oil industry between 2015 - 2026.

According to Secretary General Lersak Rewtrakulpaibul, the office has drafted the 10 year master plan, aiming to increase the country's palm oil production to reach a balance between demand and supply in the country.

In the plan, plantation areas will be extended from the present 4.5 million rai to 7.5 million rai, while production should be increased from 3.2 tons per rai to 3.5 tons.

The office will also promote the country's annual consumption of palm oil, hoping to increase the yearly consumption from 1.02 million tons to 1.35 million tons and increase the use of palm oil as an alternative energy source from 1.3 million tons to 2.6 million tons, while maintaining exports at 300,000 - 700,000 tons a year.

Though Thailand is the third largest palm oil producer in the world, it remains a distant third behind Malaysia and Indonesia. The two countries combined have output of 85% of global palm oil production.

Northeast hit by cold weather

BANGKOK, 14 December 2014 (NNT) – Temperatures in the northeastern province of Sakon Nkhon have dropped for two consecutive days with the lowest temperature being 13 degrees Celsius. More than 200,000 people in the region have been affected by the cold weather.

The lowest temperature recorded on a mountain top in Sakon Nakhon is 6 degrees Celsius. People in the Phuphan mountain areas, who have been affected the most by the coldness and strong winds, are in need of winter clothes and blankets to warm themselves. Nakhon Phanom, another northeastern province, has reported a record low temperature of this year of 14 degrees Celsius.

Chief of the disaster prevention and mitigation office in Sakon Nakhon Wichan Thaenhin said the province would likely be declared a disaster area if its temperatures were below 15 degrees Celsius for more than three consecutive days. If the province was declared a disaster zone, it would allocate budget to buy blankets for the affected people, said Mr Wichan.

The Sakon Nakhon meteorological station has reported that the temperatures in the province will further drop by 2-4 degrees Celsius from 16-18 December and warned the locals of fire risks due to strong winds.

BANGKOK: -- It goes without say that change is part of life and in a massive city such as Bangkok that is inevitable as the old is replaced with the new but throwing away history and heritage at the expense of a ridiculous idea that will never work or take off is bewildering.

Coconut stocks to be checked next week for illegally imported fruit

PRACHUAP KHIRI KHAN, 14 December 2014 (NNT) - Prachuap Khiri Khan Province is to send its inspectors to check whether there are illegal stocks of imported coconut which are suspected to be the cause of falling coconut prices.

Mr. Weera Sriwatanatrakul, governor of Prachuap Khiri Khan said he had conducted an investigation into the falling price of coconut and found this year's coconut produce does not exceed the market demand. Yet the price has fallen to nine baht per fruit. The governor said he doubted that the falling price might be a result of illegally imported coconut.

He said the inspection of coconut stockpiles will be held next week to ensure there is no coconut smuggling from neighboring countries.

The Governor also said his policy to strengthen coconut prices in the long run is to encourage farmers to engage in a full-cycle coconut industry which involves production, value-adding process and development of coconut strains and plantations. The measure will allow Thai coconut exports to remain competitive in the Southeast Asian market when ASEAN Community is launched next year.
