Popular Post daiwill60
Wanting to comment on teacher holidays, days given up to learning to dance or otherwise perform, and khaow tao to local leaders or discipling kids in school, or instilling a need to learn english or being allowed to be exposed to more english without dubbed speech and just have thai subtitles , etc etc , you know, like they do in vietnam, but i really do not think it would make much difference anymore. So I won't bother.
Popular Post EnzoRippo
Bla bla bla Science is incompatible with fairy-tales and the 12 commitments taught in Thai schools. Also researchers need to have their full imaginative ability and may have iconoclast ideas. Impossible under the current regime, not only because of law but due to the mindset the Junta chief mentions at the end of the speech.

Popular Post Chang_paarp
Watch out boss! Those skills require critical thinking to succeed, does Thailand want free thinking people running around? They might form opinions!

thesetat2013
I have seen many schools science fairs and not once have i seen anything that was not miscopied from the internet or done with ingenuity or self thought. As long as Thailand inhibits creativity amd curiousity and self thought they will never produce any significant worthy to make a change.
Tatsujin
Blah, blah, hot air, blah, blah ... come on, we know what's wrong and could be improved, but you have ZERO intentions to actually do anything about it. Let me give you a clue Mr PM, it starts with education and free will.
Popular Post Christie Paul
The former Soviet Union realised they had a problem. Scientific, technical and academic standards where appalling and constituted a security threat. The leadership realised that an oppressive environment stifled ideas, creativity and academic excellence. They developed remote enclaves in which academics enjoyed complete freedom, even freedom of speech, even against authorities. It didn't take long for their investment to pay off. Huge advances in aerospace, mathematics, nuclear technology and numerous other developments firmly placed the Soviet Union as a world leader in various fields of science and technology. But their auto and consumer goods industry did not qualify for entrance to the enclaves of freedom. As a result you had perhaps the worlds best missile and rocket technology and the world's worst cars. You can order people to kill and you can order them to march around. But you cannot order them to be happy, creative or inventive.

Squeegee
"...the Children’s day motto ‘Knowledge and Morality Lead to the Future' " Double-speak right out of 1984. More like ensuring a distinct lack of knowledge and morality lead endlessly to the past, whereby the general populace are so brainwashed with 'sanuk' and "Thailand number 1" that they are unconcerned about the few pigs who have it all to themselves.
khunpa
Sounds great! And I guess the action plan is to make it more difficult for foreigners, with the know-how, to help with this? May I suggest to make the visa and work permit procedures much harder and also make investors feel uncomfortable, by harder rules towards foreign investment? Chase all foreigners away and the goals will be completed. Go for it! Edited December 17, 2014 by khunpa
fstarbkk
Worthy goals indeed! But one must learn to walk before running. A good basic education system that teaches young people to think, analyze and question the status quo, would help lay the foundation to higher achievements and innovation in all areas.

You beat me to it and I have already said good bye to Thailand. Yes, there is a lack of knowledge. Perhaps, they should focus on 3D printing that is catching on, or open hardware which is taking off in southern China The electronics market in Bangkok is not bad, but it is lacking considering the world's largest market is only 2 hours and 30mins a way. May I suggest to make the visa and work permit procedures much harder and also make investors feel uncomfortable, by harder rules towards foreign investment? Chase all foreigners away and the goals will be completed. Go for it! Yup. I looked at bringing my UAV technology to Thailand nearly 10 years ago. After exploring many avenues, I decided to keep my business out of this country. Anyone in an official capacity was only interested in how to sell it to their boss at a ridiculous price and collect their paper bags full of money in McDonalds. The work permit system prohibits any small foreign company from working here due to the staff, office and salary requirements. If you don't hit the ground earning 50,000 baht/month + salary for 4 staff, you aren't eligible. Since then I have learned a lot more about this place and I'm glad I kept out. To say technology in this country needs a rocket up it's @rse is an understatement. The way to enjoy life here is to keep your head down and just bring in money when you need it.

Just do what you do: graduate your students with a science degree (whether they attended class or not, whether they understood lectures or not, all exams are passed anyways) and voila you have your bright, blank minds ready to compete internationally. Skills? ...just memorize it. Good luck for the future, don't be left behind.

12DrinkMore
The way to enjoy life here is to keep your head down and just bring in money when you need it. Summarized in one sentence. Only thing to add is take a very good look at what you think you need. If it is a Thai wife, girlfriend, property, business, then the "bring money in" zooms up the exponential curve, and the return slides down at an even faster rate. Unless, of course, "this one is different".
Lupatria
I think the right order would be- first you need a proper system for basic education before you dream about producing little som tam Einsteins.
Tokay
They could start by teaching students what the planets are and what stars are made of. It also wouldn't hurt to explain to them that our sun is not the center of the entire universe.

Fred Flinstone
Believing in things that are not so doesn't help. Children have Gobblin's and Ghosts and lost slippers and Magic heroes . Big castles , and dragons. Its best left there in Child hood. Science might have people examining how ordinary we all are in the light of truths. Dispel myths and fears and silly super human beliefs . Many Thais in rural Thailand were asked by my daughter on her tape recorder some questions for her science class project. It was shocking to hear replies. What is rain? Why is the sun hot? Has anyone been on the moon? Whats micro organisms ? Only one of the 10 people *(who could speak enough english to answer) knew about the moon missions - she was a high school student . She didn't however understand that drying fish in the sun which attracted flies then eating it was unhygienic . No one answered why the sun was hot .(or knew it was a constant thermonuclear explosion) Even rain and evaporation processes couldn't be understood by farmers. So i think there is a need to to educate. Edited December 17, 2014 by Fred Flinstone
