Motorists warned to drive carefully during New Year's festival

BANGKOK: -- Motorists were warned today to drive carefully at a speed not more than 100 km/hour on certain high-risk highways during the New Year’s festival.

Mrs Kannavee Kanitpong, manager of Accident Centre of Thailand of the Asian Institute of Technology, identified the following highways as high risk that motorists should exercise more caution and drive carefully: Wang Noi-Ayutthaya at KM 70; Rama II road; highway 41 between Prachuab Khiri Khan and Chumporn; highway 32 between Uthai Thani and Nakhon Sawan.

Citing statistics since 2008, Mrs Kannavee disclosed that road accidents tend to become more serious with 12 fatalities for every 100 accidents largely due to drivers and passengers not using safety belts and motorcyclists and pillion riders not wearing crash helmets and speeding.

The safest cruising speed is no more than 100 km/hour, she said, adding that the centre would propose high penalties against speedsters.

During the New Year’s festival this year, there were altogether 3.174 road accidents resulting to 366 deaths and 3,345 injuries. Drunk driving accounted for 41.7 percent of the accidents followed by speeding which accounted for 25.83 percent. Motorcycles accounted for 81.03 percent of the accidents.

No reason to change the road safety campaign since it's worked so successfully in the past.

"...12 fatalities for every 100 accidents..."

I believe it's only considered a road fatality if the victims are declared dead at the site of the crash. If they die on the way to the hospital or in the hospital, it isn't considered a road fatality. Nice way make tourists feel safer before coming to Thailand and witnessing the horror show for themselves.

Especially so when driving Lamborghinis.

The only thing that might get drivers in line is a statement like this:-

Police marksmen will shoot to kill drivers who are seen speeding.

Speeding means exceeding the limit for that class of road by 10 Kmph.

Oh, of course they would have to shoot a good few before anyone believed it.....

So, nothing will change and there will be many more dead and maimed.

Tragedy and for what?

Save ten minutes on a journey?

Ok , can close this thread now?

What a funny place..... No wonder so many are smiling. Can an entire country be a "joke"?

but after new year you can drive inn normal Thai fashion, drunk and carelssly

If certain roads and highways are not as high risk, why not do something to make them safer?

Getting a monk to bless and road and rid it off ghosts is not the answer

Shooting someone dead for being 10km over the limit?

Apart from being a somewhat over the top solution, would their not be some rather serious consequences for all about if a speeding car's driver is shot dead?

As I have said before, If you calculate the ratio between the total number of accidents/fatalities and the total number of vehicles on the road, that ratio will be the same for Thailand any time of the year, be it New Year or any other day of the week or year.

Motorists have been warned that although you do not need to pay attention while driving in normal situations, these 7 days are very special and motorists need to look where they are going and not drive at speeds where they cannot control the vehicle.

Hmmm .... SOUNDS LIKE GOOD ADVICE TO ME!

100km is still too fast for most of the Thai drivers, considering they have minimal driving skills and never had a lesson.

Thank goodness they issued that warning ...........I feel so much safer now.

Of course the ones who need the warnings are the ones who will never listen as they have supernatural incredible powers.

Sadly the folk they mow down and destroy dont

Some of their buffaloes could get quite a sprint on in years gone bylaugh.png

Their driving might improve with a hole in the skull?

You would have to tell the Police first what the speed limit was.............many dont know

Thailand's population is always at least 200 people lesser the beginning of the year, every year!

A posting of the speed limit on highways & roads would be a good start.

....that ought to do it......

Such Stalin nonsense.

"Motorists warned to drive carefully during New Year's festival"

Especially so when driving Lamborghinis.

Close but no cigar.

"if you drive a Lamborghinis; Arrive Alive or your connections and money don't count.

"Mrs Kannavee disclosed that road accidents tend to become more serious"

Another day, another announcement......

I just wonder what the number will be in deaths this new year period.never changes and the same warnings every year.be careful and don,t kill yourself,or don,t get caught

"Motorists warned to drive carefully during New Year's festival"

But only if they're orange...... with no number plates....

Thai motorists drive carefully??????????????? HO HO HO.

A posting of the speed limit on highways & roads would be a good start.

and do you really thing the vast majority of Thai drivers will care?

I would also add that incredibly slow drivers should also avoid driving in the fast lane for no reason. If drivers wish to drive at the same speed as the trucks, then drive in the slow lane and let the average drivers go 90-110 or whatever speed the traffic wants to flow at in the other lanes.

Well it looks like the anti drink drive campaign has already started today in Pattaya . I was stopped this morning at a check point , usually it's just a driving license check but not today , license , tax and insurance was demanded (which was all in order) but then out came the breathalizer which I had to blow into . Luckily it was o.k. but after a skin full last night I was worried to say the least as I've heard the morning after the night before can give high alcohol readings but as mine was o.k. maybe not . Plus a large tent was being erected on Sukhumvit Road outside Big C getting ready for more spot checks I presume . Just a heads up boys , be careful .

So she gives the big "warning" cites some statistics and then delivers the normal killer line " adding that the centre would propose high penalties against speedsters." What a load of poop.
