Boy, I hate to sound stupid and I know this has been brought up before, but what exactly is a troll and what is a troll post?

Are there any examples of troll posts and trolls? Also what does flaming mean?

Scott, I can't believe your asking such a stupid question. What's your problem? Didn't you finish grade school? Are you trolling? &$#*&@$ arse*^%$&s.

That's an example of a flame. :D

You're an example of a troll. :o

Yeesh - I agree. I'm glad I didn't see that thread.

I would suggest that you go and read it Kat. You will find out that i actualy saved a puppy from a certain death on a busy Bangkok intersection, i then had to take the following day of work to try and find a home for her, I found a member on here with a home for her on Koh Samui. My daughter and i then went to the pet shop, bought a cage for transport, took her to Don Muang Airport, bought her a plane ticket and put her on the plane to her new owner.

For this i got abused by a certain member of the forum, stating that because i have a maid and earn good money i should be able to keep the dog myself. Quite a sad show realy.

In my opening post i said that i would drown the pup next week if i did not find a home for her, This i would have never done, it was mearly a way of conveying an urgency to the request.

Please excuse my spelling in this post as i have just finished work having had to go in today to catch up on the work i missed on friday.

Regards.

Lacoste.

Wow. Well it sounds like I missed a lot, because I agree that was an incredibly generous act. Good on you for saving a young dog's life; I wish I could do it as many times as I think about doing it.

Back on topic, I think the Wikipedia Troll definition and info is pretty good. In relation to this topic, I think this quote from Wikipedia is worth bearing in mind:

"Customs of discourse, or etiquette, originating in physical communities are often applied naively to online discourse by newcomers who are not used to the range of views expressed online, often anonymously. Hence, both users and posts are commonly, and sometimes inaccurately, labelled as trolls when their content upsets people — ironically, the accusatory labeling of a troll may be more disruptive than the original alleged offense itself".

If you think someone is a troll (or is trolling), just don't feed them.

Thanks kerryd--it is a serious (although perhaps stupid) question.
Did you read my previous reply (3 above yours) ?

Hey Scott, I deserve the credit for the excellent clarifying examples I gave. :D Kerry doesn't deserve anything. He never has. :o:D

What a good topic to get your niggles out of the way along with noting the fair points highlighted.

I for one cannot understand why members found to continually disrupt topics are not first yellow carded and suspended from any further activity on the relevant thread if they persist.

They should then be red carded if they are guilty of further disruption on others.

A fair penalty for all while not a complete ban except for the extreme cases.

You cannot censor one post and allow another without creating confusion by the way, no matter who the member is.

We are all guilty of so called flaming due to a healthy debate but i,d like to think it is not meant to

be major, just a reaction to our own likes and dislikes, which due to our diverse backgrounds are to be expected.

I have been warned a couple of times for T.Visa rule offences which where minor but non the less

against rules and i am happy with this.

We should accept the decisions with no problem or resentment to anyone and not carry them into future posts.

The report function is a good way to deal with this and hopefully it will stop things getting out of hand.

My interpretation of this function is that it brings us back to reality ( while not intending to getting someone banned ), hopefully they accept without resentment or bias and cease.

Not intentionally want a ban anyway as this can create real problems especially for the mods.

I hate threads having to be closed due to no brainers disrupting the flow by diverging and going completely off topic to create chaos.

I enjoy the debates and if people reasonably disagree then it shouldn,t hurt to do so without being branded negative while taking on board the points that are worthy of further thought.

As one poster said ignore the trolls and they will go away, or if i can add, feel the wrath of the Mods who are more than capable of sorting them out.

In my humble opinion.

I,ve finished so you can wake up from your semi trance now as i,ve just come out of mine.

Having met many good people from ThaiVisa ... in person ..... They aren't just words on a screen

I have never met any of these so called "people" you claim are from ThaiVisa. So you see all I am getting is text on a luminous screen.....no "they" about it. When you read my post you can go ahead and think that it isn't just words on a screen......but I can't imagine what else it might be.

Chownah...did he really go out and cultivate a field today?.....or just text on a screen....how can you tell?...really you can't.

It is probably best you keep it that way too .....

saves folks like the awesome folks I met in BKK and now in Phuket from dealing with people that ONLY see them as words on a screen ...

That being said .... that Britmav is a worry :o

I think that you misunderstand me. I do not see people as words on a screen. I do not see people as images on a video screen either. I do not see people as pictures in a magazine....

On the other hand I do not see words on a screen as being people. Do you see words on a screen as being people? If you turn your video monitor off where do all those people go? When you log on to TV where do all those people suddenly appear from? When you posted "It is probably best you keep it that way too " do you think that you were replying to a person?...or to some text on the screen? If you thought you were replying to a person did you intend to cause that person discomfort? If I thought that the text "It is probably best you keep it that way too ....." was a person I guess I would think that that person was sort of thoughtless and a bit cruel.....but.....I don't think of that text as being a person....so I don't have to attribute thoughtless cruelty to anyone......its just text on a luminous screen.....nothing to get excited about.

Chownah....or is it Chownot?

You have to remind yourself that some people have so little going on in there lives, for one reason or another, they find the need to talk people down on an internet forum.

Dont worry about it, this is just the nature of a few unfortunate people. :D Try to remember that it is not always they're fault that they were dealt a shity set of cards and have to gain self esteme from picking faults with others. :D

Thanks for the post kayo.....it reminded me that I don't JUST get text on a luminous screen....I also get a wide variety of smileys on a luminous screen...along with the text.

And since the topic here is supposed to be "Repeating Theme At Tv"...I think we should all contemplate those multiferous splendiferous smileys which adorn our luminous screens suggesting the repetitive themes of erstwhile existence.

If jdinasia thinks that text on a luminous screen is actually people, does he think that the smileys are actually their faces?

Yes Chownah ... you are just reading words on a screen .... they are written by real people (sometimes) or trolls (sometimes). Your semantics certainly allow trolls to not have to feel anything about deliberately winding people up.

As for emoticons ... I assume you are again just playing a semantic game. Emoticons are meant to show the emotive content to go with the message. They take the sting out of what could be considered nasty and make it ironic if you use them correctly.

My semantics don't "allow" troll to do anything because my semantics is just text on a lumninous screen. Trolls don't wind people up....people wind themselves up when they see text on a luminous screen and react as if they were responding to a person.....when in fact they are just responding to text on a screen. If someone reads something and then thinks, "this is a troll", and then they post a reply, are they replying to a person? Who is that person? Where are they? Are they clothed or naked? Hair color, eye color, skin color, teeth or toothless........all these things do not apply. It makes more sense to me that they are just replying to luminous text on a screen. What if one of these "people" you claim are on TV make a troll post and then never come back....they never ever log on to TV again....and yet someone...perhaps many someones...reply to those troll like words on the luminous screen. I think that you would say that they are replying to a so called "person"....but the replies are just howling at the moon...will that "troll like person" here these howlings...I think not.....and in fact the text on the luminous screen will not hear them either.

You could consider that I am a troll. You could consider that I am winding you up. It is up to you to interpret the text that appears on your luminous screen....and it is you who will suffer or delight in your own interpretation...........

Not at all, though if this is the general thought of the locals i will go else where.

I joined this board to help with advice to people and gain knowlege from other members, however there is a small minority who seem to think because they have met some fellow members in person that they have the right to abuse those they have not whos points of view differ from theirs and when they get the same treatment in return they start calling people trolls or calling mods to ban them or get the thread closed down.

It should be noted that infact if you read the post history of such users around 60 percent of the posts they have made over the part 2 months would be considred breaking Thaivisa rules. ie, flaming or pointless comments.

Childish? yes, Petty? yes, Annoying? Slightly, Sad? most certainly.
