NARATHIWAT: -- Authorities have stepped up security for the 11th anniversary of the attack by a band of militants on a military camp in Narathiwat's Joh I Rong district in which four soldiers were killed and many weapons pilfered.

A joint force of police, soldiers and local officials from 13 districts have been ordered to stay on high alert and checkpoints have been set up. Of the 413 stolen firearms, 104 have been recovered.

Two men have been apprehended in connection with the robbery and 11 men face arrest warrants.

Officials believe the guns have been used in 16,969 insurgent attacks since the raid on January 4, 2004. Of the total, 8,027 were bomb attacks, 3,022 arson attacks, 1,647 crashes, 339 assaults and 172 weapon snatching from security officials, 102 brutal killings, 65 protests, 3,315 disturbances and 22 other incidents. 4 soldiers killed in this attack 11 years ago......there were 4 soldiers killed, patrolling on the famous armoured Honda bikes, just a few weeks ago, and there was hardly a word was mentioned about the incident.

"Ordered to stay on high alert"......famous last words unfortunately! (pun unintended)

For those who continue to cling to their beliefs that Tak Bai was the start of violent insurgency, this incident in Jan 2004 made it clear that insurgency activities actually started before and increasingly violent and frequent after this armoury raid; a full 9 months difference.

Wasn't the raid when his lowliness Thaksin,

said the 4 soldiers deserved to die as they failed in their

duty to protect the base???
