USA visa question

Featured Replies

Hello, I apologize for the redundancy - wanted to make clear as I know visa rules have changed lately. Never been to thai before.

USA citizen. Flying to bkk from Czech Republic via Ukraine on a one way ticket, staying for just under 60 days.

If I get a 60 day visa beforehand - am I NOT required to also get an onward flight ticket leaving the country?

If I do NOT get a visa beforehand - am I granted a 30 day visa upon arrival (able to extend upon arrival 30 more days, for a total of 60). If I do not have a visa prior to flying to bkk, then I DO need a return ticket, correct?

Thank you - just want to be clear to avoid headaches.

Great day to all

If you have a visa you do not need a onward or return ticket out of the country.

If you don't have a visa you may be asked for ticket out of the country within 30 days in order to board you flight to here. It can be a one way ticket to a nearby country there is no requirement for it to be a return ticket.

You can extend a 30 day visa exempt entry it (is not a visa on arrival) at an immigration office for 30 days.

awesome, thank you both. saw that thread but wasn't sure if any changes have been made...heard its been fairly turbulent there lately. Thanks again and see you soon!

Just a reminder, day 1 of your exempt 30 days is the day you arrive. So count days accordingly to avoid overstay penalties, it is easy to loose track of the days.

Not easy, and and no need to count. The date by which one has to leave or extend is stamped at arrival.

Judging by the number of overstays, I'd guess many people don't look.

OP, it is my understanding that it is the airline, not Thailand which might require the onward flight ticket. It is my understanding that if someone is denied entry into the Kingdom, the airline is responsible to fly him back out. An onward ticket relieves the airline of that issue.

I have never been asked for an onward ticket any time I left the US. I arrive at the airport early so that I can buy one to Cambodia if required by the airline. The Cambodia ticket would be a throw-away since I wouldn't need it. As Americans (and many other countries) we are allowed to pop up in Thailand visa exempt.
